Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy @usnavy !
🎉 🎂 🎁

To our steadfast partner on the seas, here’s to 251 more! (Just remember who’s the longest continuous seaborne service 👀).

Slides 1 & 2 may be from DVIDS, but 3 & 4 are from one of our cadets at Port Canaveral watching an attack submarine come into port! (Information is well out of date). It’s always a pleasure to help welcome you home, even as Cadets doing our part.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
September 27th, 1942, a Coast Guardsman Signalman 1st Class Douglas Albert Munro performed an act of extraordinary heroism that embodied the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.

On that day, off Guadalcanal, Munro was a part of a forward deployed base of Coast Guard personnel for ship to shore ferrying, and Search & Rescue duties. Signalman 1st Class Munro and his best friend and shipmate Raymond Evans, after dropping off over 500 Marines, led by then Lt. Col Chesty Puller, ashore, became aware of the Marines being almost cut off by Japanese troops ashore in heavy fighting. A fighting withdrawal was ordered to the shore for evacuation, landing craft were instructed to extract the Marines under fire.

Upon both Munro and Evans being asked if they would take charge of the mission, Munro answered without hesitation:

“Hell yes!”

As the boats and landing craft approached the beaches, they came under heavy fire from Japanese in the surrounding area and high ground. Munro manned a .30 caliber Lewis gun, directing covering fire, covering other vessels recovering troops and casualties alike. With the infantry continuing their withdrawal, and the Japanese advancing alike, Munro piloted his boat closer ashore to act as a shield for Marines, and closer still for a grounded vessel.

As Munro shielded others and provided covering fire, Munro was struck in the base of his skull by enemy fire and lost consciousness.

After the other craft were extracted, and beyond range of enemy fire, Munro briefly regained consciousness, his final words being:

“Did they get off?”. After seeing Evans nod their success, Munro smiled, and passed away.

For these actions above and beyond the call of duty, he became the only Coast Guardsman as of yet, to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, nominated by Lt. Colonel Puller.

Munro’s legacy did not end that day on Guadalcanal. After the war, his remains were reinterred in his hometown in Cle Elum, Washington. He is commemorated there and at Training Center Cape May every year, where every new recruit learns of his story.

He is the namesake of multiple statues, memorials, awards, scholarship by @uscgaup_floridatech

This week’s schedule for Florida Tech AUP!

Our monthly flotilla meeting is this Thursday at our flotilla headquarters, and our second AUP meeting of the semester is this Friday! This upcoming meeting involves an Intro to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection presentation by our Division Commander! Interested students are able to attend and see what the AUP can offer!

Students in the @uscg_aup are able to take this course as an equivalency to the @uscg 12 week Marine Science Technician A-School! The course is ideal for AUP students, and is a requirement for the Marine Safety Ribbon.

Our flotilla meeting will review our flotilla’s actions in the last month, with the AUP as a detachment of 070-17-02, and determine the next month’s objectives.

Interested in joining the AUP? Message this account, and we’ll get you started!

Here’s a sneak peak at our early morning operations and view of cruise liner traffic into Port Canaveral! Maritime Security and Boating Safety takes every part of responsible agencies working together to make a difference for the better. Thankfully, with the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard AUP, our cadets are able to learn how to and do make a difference right where we are.

‘What goes up…’
This weekend’s launch of the @spacex Falcon Heavy carrying the Nancy Grace Roman telescope wasn’t immediately audible at 15 miles, but the @uscgaux with @uscg_aup cadets had an excellent view from Port Canaveral while executing our Boating Safety mission!

Florida Tech AUP members assisted in Space Launch Support team operations under orders at Port Canaveral this Sunday, for the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman telescope!
As a part of #teamcoastguard as a force multiplier, Auxiliarists assisted the CG and OGA’s (other government agencies) on keeping recreational and other vessel traffic from entering the Restricted Area, Regulated Navigation Area, and the downrange Launch Hazard Area.
Unlike humanity’s new eye in the sky, you don’t have to be 930,000 miles away to make a big difference. Joining the AUP/the Coast Guard Auxiliary allows you to do good from right where you are!

On this day, August 4th, 2026, we celebrate the 236th anniversary of the founding of the oldest continual seagoing service, United States Coast Guard. It’s initial form, the Revenue Marine was founded in 1790 by Founding Father, and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, later becoming the Revenue Cutter Service, and in 1915, combined with the United States Life-Saving-Service to officially become the United States Coast Guard.

From an initial ten cutters to cover America’s tariff and customs enforcement at ports, the Revenue Marine grew into a maritime force, the largest Coast Guard in the world, of more than 41,000 Active Duty Members, 6,000 Reservists, 26,000 Auxilarists, and 9,000 Civilian Employees, (Source: USCG.mil Workforce). With two dozen air stations, hundreds of aircraft, hundreds of cutters/ships, thousands of smaller craft, and radio facilities, Team Coast Guard is ready, willing, and able to face the challenges our missions present.

For all men and women who have served in Team Coast Guard, past and present, who have heeded our nation’s call, and have remained Always Ready.

From all of us at Florida Tech AUP, Bravo Zulu!

Here’s to 23 more decades of excellence!
