Creativity, culture and the future of design define the spirit of USC Architecture. The ideas that shape our program emerge from the perspectives our community brings into the studio and the values they choose to explore.

Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Architecture Alvin Huang @synthesisdna , Associate Professor Doris Sung @dosustudio, Adjunct Assistant Professor Kevin Sherrod @sh3rrod, and M.Arch student Morgan Lewis @morganlewiiss reflect a shared belief that architecture moves forward when diverse voices and ways of thinking intersect. Their insights resonate across the work produced in our studios, where experimentation, cultural awareness, and emerging technologies drive discovery.

What sets our program apart is a culture that empowers students to challenge convention and imagine futures that expand the possibilities of design.

For some people, the process is simply a means to an end. To others, the journey means just as much as the destination.

At USC graduate architecture, we see design as a process. It is a process of mastering a wide range of design skills and representational techniques. It is a process of leveraging technology and enabling innovation. It is a process of embracing craft through making, prototyping, and fabricating. It is a process of advocating for communities and working with them, not for them. It is a process of thinking critically about the world around us, of challenging convention and speculating about what could be.

At USC graduate architecture, the process is the product.

We offer the following graduate architecture degrees:
Master of Architecture (3 years)
Master of Architecture w/ advanced standing (2 years)
Master of Advanced Architectural Research Studies (1 year)
City Design + Housing
Master of Advanced Architectural Research Studies (1 year)
M.AARS Performative Design + Technology

Precision. Clarity. Range.

Anjing (AJ) @anjing_tang Tang’s work demonstrates a rare mastery of architectural representation across scales, media, and intentions. From conceptual drawings to technical documentation, and from projected geometries to constructed assemblies, her work consistently translates abstract ideas into legible, rigorous, and buildable architectures.

Her portfolio moves fluidly between theoretical structures, comprehensive building proposals, geometric explorations, architectural installations, and furniture design, each executed with a high level of precision and graphic sophistication. What distinguishes AJ is her ability to use representation not just as a tool of communication, but as a method of design thinking, revealing relationships between form, structure, and material with clarity and intent.

As a Metropolis @metropolismag Future100 winner, AJ exemplifies the power of drawing and making as both analytical and generative acts.

Nominator: Alvin Huang @synthesisdna and Lawrence Scarpa @scarbusier University of Southern California

Alvin Huang:
“She brings an advanced intellectual framework and global perspective to her work, elevating discussions within studio and contributing significantly to our academic culture. A.J. is one of the most consistently outstanding students we have.”

From first moves to final mastery.

Kaiji Luo’s @kaiji_luo trajectory traces a clear evolution of design intelligence and craft, moving from abstract compositional studies in ARCH505a, to embedded landform architecture in ARCH505b, to collective housing in ARCH605a, and into a comprehensive CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) building solution in ARCH605b, before advancing into research on passive cooling façade systems in ARCH705.

Across each stage, what stands out is the precision and ambition of his physical model making paired with an increasingly sophisticated digitally enabled workflow. From early formal explorations to highly resolved tectonic systems, his work demonstrates a rare ability to translate ideas into material, spatial, and performative outcomes.

As a Metropolis @metropolismag Future100 winner, Kaiji exemplifies the kind of designer who is equally fluent in concept, computation, and craft.

We can’t wait to see what his final thesis model looks like.

Nominator: Alvin Huang @synthesisdna Associate Professor and Director of Graduate and Post-Professional Architecture, USC School of Architecture

“Kaiji brings together rare innate design talent with exceptional technical skill, deep curiosity, and remarkable motivation. His portfolio demonstrates an ability to manipulate form, space, pattern, and material with clarity, dexterity, and conceptual rigor.”

More than a visit.

An open studio, a working culture, and a network in motion. Admitted students experienced USC Architecture through the people who define it.

The work matters, but so does the culture behind it. Conversations, mentorship, and shared ambition shaping an environment that extends well beyond the classroom.

This is what you step into.
