“The APRU Climate Change Leadership Program gave me a deeper understanding of how closely climate change is connected to our communities, our health, and our shared future.”

That’s how Junaira Faruk, a Master of Public Health student at @keckschoolusc, describes the experience of taking part in the APRU Certificate in Global Climate Change Leadership this August and September.

Junaira continued: “It reinforced the importance of caring for the planet and recognizing that meaningful change requires greater awareness, responsibility, and collective action from all of us. I especially valued learning from different perspectives and seeing how countries and communities can work together to address such a complex global challenge. I came away from the program feeling more informed, more thoughtful, and more motivated to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable world.”

Junaira was one of 14 USC students, including 4 from Keck School of Medicine, who joined about 220 students from 25 universities in this four-week experiential program. Students played the role of delegates to the UN climate change negotiations, working in multidisciplinary, international teams representing one of six economies or regions. Using the World Climate Interactive and C-ROADS simulation model, they negotiated in breakout rooms facilitated by international climate science experts and heard from experts on topics from clean energy to diplomacy. taken in Keck School of Medicine of USC by @uscpphs

AI is reshaping public health research, and yesterday we saw it up close. 🔬

The 2026 PPHS Research Symposium brought faculty, researchers, students, and staff to the Soto Street building for a day themed “Translational AI in Public Health Research.” Highlights included faculty presentations, AI-powered research, rapid-fire postdoc talks, and an open poster session.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped spark new collaborations. 💡 A group of individuals sit in a row at what appears to be a panel discussion. Environmental health research, supercharged ⚡️

For more than 30 years, the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center, based at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, has backed research on air pollution, extreme heat, wildfires, and PFAS. Now an $8 million NIH grant keeps that work going and expands it into artificial intelligence and cancer. Its pilot program has generated a 30-to-1 return on its investments.

Dean's POV 🔎 Last week, Carolyn Meltzer, MD, transitioned into a new role. Her leadership advanced research, strengthened our clinical enterprise, and shaped countless careers across Keck School. I'm grateful for that impact, and look forward to keeping the momentum going. — Interim Dean Papadopoulos Headshot of Vassilios Papadopoulos, DPharm, PhD, DSc (hon) in an outdoor setting, wearing a blue blazer and dotted tie. by @uscpphs

Jose Aparicio has spent over 20 years of his career working in medical research at USC. He started as a data auditor, then moved into clinical trials under the Department of Neurology. In 2016, he transitioned to cancer research at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center under the Population and Public Health Sciences Department's division of Cancer Prevention and Control.

His work involves the management of large NIH funded grants and bringing to bear expertise in protection of human subjects, federal grants regulations, data capture systems, and research involving human specimens. His work includes close relationships with the National Cancer Institute, who recognized his contributions to program evaluation and outcomes of a cancer research network developed by NCI.

In 2026 Jose became the Chair of the KSOM Staff Council for FY27. He loves using data to improve outcomes and enjoys art museums and science documentaries in his time off. A person wearing glasses and a dark button-up shirt is shown. Text reads: "Staff, Unscripted with Jose Aparicio, CCRP, Project Administrator, KSOM Staff Council Chair. by @uscpphs

The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences ranks #1 in NIH funding in its field (2025 Blue Ridge) and is the leading force of the Keck School’s standing as #1 in NIH funding per investigator.

Our research operates in more than a dozen countries, with partners including the World Health Organization, the United Nations, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention.

Founded in 1977, the department is home to more than 125 faculty. We offer 12 degree programs at the undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and certificate levels, including the Master of Public Health. This summer, Michelle Navarette Vega, a student in USC’s MS in Biostatistics program, completed the Cancer Prevention Research Training Program at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center (@mdandersoncancercenter), working with Dr. Kim-Anh Do’s lab.

Her research explored new ways to predict breast cancer risk using blood biomarkers measured over time. By applying a Bayesian screening framework to longitudinal data, she helped improve both the accuracy and timing of risk prediction compared with the standard approach.

“The foundation I built in USC’s Biostatistics MS program made this possible. My coursework in data analysis and epidemiology, along with my thesis experience working with complex biological data, prepared me to dive into real clinical data and problem-solve from day one.”

The experience also helped clarify what comes next: pursuing a PhD focused on identifying chronic disease risk earlier and more accurately.

Congratulations, Michelle--and thank you to Dr. Kim-Anh Do and Dr. Ehsan Irajizad for their mentorship! The image shows an individual standing in front of a poster presentation, which is about "Longitudinal Blood-Based Biomarker Trajectories" concerning breast cancer risk. The poster includes logos for MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas. The individual appears to be at a conference or academic setting. by @uscpphs
