One week ago, this village opened its doors. We want to dedicate this post to the unbelievable partner organizations who have helped make this happen:

USF, SOS Richmond, YouthWorks, Hope Solutions, GRIP, and RPAL

We sincerely could not have done this without you!

Now the real work continues, and we would love your help. Here are a few ways to be part of it:

Give: https://www.gofundme.com/f/richmond-tiny-house-village-farm-and-garden
Volunteer: https://www.tinyvillagespirit.org/volunteer/
Spread the word: share this post with someone who cares about housing in the Bay Area

Thank you for turning a big day into a beginning.

🎥 In the midst of SF summer, hundreds of people abandoned the coveted sunny weather to pack into a sold-out Roxie Theater for the one-night-only 20th-anniversary screening of “MAQUILÁPOLIS” (2006). A roaring applause smattered with joyous cheers of support rang from the theater as the credits rolled. The audience seemed to swell with a sense of collective effervescence and pride for the filmmakers, the film’s protagonists and the inspiring message of agency for feminist, workers rights and environmental justice activism.

Arch 400 spent the day in Huron, walking the site for a design/build project in development with @calileap @xicanomayor and USFArch alum/ current UCLA grad student @alekciriarte

Students measured, photographed, sketched, and learned about the community who will use the building… More to come as the design takes shape.

What does it take to bring life back to an island that has lost 90% of its people?

In “Japanese House Demolition/Reuse,” students in USF’s ARCH 730 Construction Innovation Lab (Spring 2023), taught by Prof. Seth Wachtel, take on the revitalization of Sagi Shima, a small island in Japan’s inland sea near Hiroshima, roughly the size of two Golden Gate Parks. Once a manufacturing hub of 3,000 residents, the island is now home to just over 300, most of retirement age, with a local school of only ten students who arrive each day by ferry. Developed in partnership with @thered.school , @naokono.tsumiki , and Bryan Ortega, the project asks how architecture built from the island’s own past can secure its future.

Collectively titled “Road 7,” the proposal treats Sagishima’s main road as a datum, threading seven structures along its path for residents and visitors alike: a multi-level floating dock for swimming, fishing, and gathering at the water; a parametric information booth near the main port; a pavilion-like library with honor-system book exchange; an open-air plaza for recreation and social life; an ADA-accessible viewing platform that doubles as a museum of local artwork; and an outdoor market and folding stalls that support the island’s agriculture and create employment for elders and youth.

Each structure is built on a modular system of simple repeating forms, designed for future expansion and rearrangement, and shaped around the island’s natural tranquility with constant visual and auditory connections to the landscape. Together, the interventions aim to strengthen tourism, encourage youth settlement and migration, and promote healthy, purposeful living for the island’s elders.

Happy #FocusFriday!

This week we’re spotlighting “Designed and Self-Designed Machines” (2025) by Matthew Peek. Created in pen on paper, the work reflects Peek’s exploration of architecture, innovative materials, and the systems that shape built environments. His practice blends design, engineering, and sustainability to imagine new possibilities for structure and space.
