Payton Seymour came to USI not knowing anyone, stepping into a new chapter alone. Over time, she found meaningful connections, built a strong community and discovered a place she now proudly calls home, both at USI and in Evansville.“I came to USI thinking I was choosing a place to play soccer, but I ended up finding so much more than that. I’m from Louisville, Kentucky, so coming here and not knowing anyone was a little scary at first. I didn’t know anybody, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But from the first time I stepped on campus, I loved it. I came for a couple visits and soccer camps, and I just remember feeling like I could see myself here. Now, I even stay in Evansville over the summers because of the community, friends and job I’ve found here.It’s hard for me to not think about all the injuries I have had to overcome during soccer career at USI. I’ve had three surgeries during my soccer career here, and there were moments where I wasn’t even able to play. But through all of that, I never felt like I stopped being part of the team. My coaches, teammates and the people around me always reminded me that I still mattered and that I was still a part of something bigger. I think that support really proved why I love it here so much.Even in the classroom, my professors have gone out of their way to know me as a person. They’ve always wanted the best for me, and that’s something I think is really special about USI. You’re not just another face in a class. People know you, they care about you and they want to see you succeed.Going into my fifth year of college soccer and working toward my master’s degree in sport management, I’m really doing this for myself, my teammates and my love for the game.. Last year was hard, and I couldn’t end my career the way I did. I’m too competitive for that.I always tell people coming to USI was the best decision I’ve ever made, and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.” #HumansofUSI by @usiedu

Meet our next #HumansofUSI feature, Jada Hogg. 👋 “I started my career teaching first grade, and people always laugh when I tell them college students and first graders have a lot in common. First graders might listen a little better, but both are at this important stage where they’re trying to figure out who they are. They’re excited, they’re learning and they need people around them who are patient and willing to guide them. I think that’s why I’ve always loved mentoring.I knew I didn’t want to retire as a teacher, but I also knew I wanted to continue helping people navigate important moments in life. I spent time helping adults reconnect with education, and when I eventually came to USI, I realized I had already been doing a lot of the work that happens in higher education without even knowing it.One of my favorite moments at USI ended up being a full-circle moment. My brother attended USI, so our family had connections here before I ever worked here. When President Ron Rochon was inaugurated, my family had been invited back because of my brother, and by the time the inauguration actually happened, I had become a USI employee. Both of my parents were here, my brother came back and we took a family picture by his basketball photo on the Arena wall. I remember thinking how special that was because I was suddenly seeing USI from a completely different perspective. I was no longer just connected through my family, I had become part of it, too.Some of my favorite moments at USI aren’t a big event or a big day. They’re small moments where a student has an epiphany, overcomes something difficult or realizes they’re capable of more than they imagined. Sometimes, you realize that if you hadn’t been there at that moment, their journey may have looked completely different.I’m at a point in my life where I’m asking myself what kind of legacy I want to leave. When you’re younger, you’re trying things and figuring it out. But eventually, you start thinking about impact. You start asking yourself, ‘What mark do I want to leave behind?’ And for me, it’s always been helping people understand themselves and helping them believe what’s possible for their future.” by @usiedu

Nita Musich has seen the University through several of its eras. Her reason for staying all these years? The sense of community and the people. 🙌 “I actually came to USI as a student back in the ’80s, right in the middle of it becoming USI. At the time, I thought it was the craziest thing. And now, here I am, all these years later.My path here wasn’t exactly traditional. I started college somewhere else, transferred, got married, started a family, changed my major a few times and eventually, life got busy. I was working, raising kids and supporting my husband’s career, which took us to different states. No matter where we went, I found myself working in schools and with school boards.I never thought I’d end up back in Evansville, but when we moved back, I found my way to USI again—this time professionally. I started in the Foundation, working with the Board, and it felt like a natural fit. That eventually led me to the President’s Office.Now, I’m the Senior Executive Assistant to the President for Board and Executive Relations. And yes, it took me a while to memorize that title. Most days, I just say I work with the President and the Board.I’ve been here since 2008, and I’ve seen a lot, especially during presidential transitions. Those moments can be challenging because they impact the entire University, but I’m proud of how we’ve navigated those changes.Commencement is always one of my favorite times. It’s such a happy moment seeing students celebrate all they’ve accomplished.The reason I’ve continued at USI is simple: it's the people. This place feels like a community. It’s supportive, caring and feels like family.Outside of work, my life revolves around family. Even though my kids and grandkids live out of state, we stay connected however we can, usually with lots of FaceTime calls.Nothing about my path has been perfectly planned, but somehow, it led me exactly where I was meant to be.” #HumansofUSI by @usiedu
