As the mornings get a little cooler, we’re warming things up with hot drinks, cake and good conversation.

This first drop-in session is a chance to come along, meet the team, find out more about what’s on offer at Appleby Blue Community Centre, and — most importantly — tell us what you would like to see, do and have access to in your local community.

Everyone is welcome. Come for a cuppa, stay for a chat, and help us shape what happens here.

🌈 EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE 🌈

Last Saturday, Appleby Blue's community centre went full cabaret for Finding Gary: A Story of Loss, Reunion and Pride, a show about family, secrets, and finding your people, performed brilliantly by @starlighttheatrecompany.

Our residents didn't just watch. They got stuck in. Some volunteered to help stage the show. Others turned Pride flags into aprons (🧵) for serving rainbow cupcakes to a packed house.

This is what our HouseProud Pledge commitment looks like on a Saturday afternoon: glitter, cake, community, and a room full of people proud to be exactly who they are and celebrate everyone.

None of it happens without @southwarkcouncil who funded the whole day. Thank you for backing celebrations like this one in our borough. 🙏

Huge thanks also to @starlighttheatrecompany, @steve.saxby_acting playwright @angela_struthers, @neonjah for sound and make-up, and our House Proud champions Jude and Alessandro for pulling it all together. 💛

Big news 🏆 Appleby Blue has been put forward in @RIBA's public vote to find the nation's favourite Stirling Prize winner — celebrating 30 years of the UK's top architecture award. #StirlingPrize30

Designed by @wwmarchitects Appleby Blue was built so older people in Southwark could grow older with dignity, independence and real community around them - with 57 residents calling it their home.

Our Appleby Blue Family Fun Day was a huge success last week! Thank you to every member of the community who joined us for a day of fun, and a huge thank you to all of the volunteers and local organisations who worked with us to make it happen! From cupcake decorating, colouring, face painting, arts and crafts to balloon making, glitter tattoos, dancing and food and drink, we hope everyone who attended had a wonderful day!

Today, we’re delighted to welcome Rotherhithe Community Kitchen to deliver their community kitchen at Appleby Blue on Sundays. 🥘

Rotherhithe Community Kitchen is a local, volunteer-led project working to tackle food insecurity across Southwark. They bring people together through fresh, nutritious meals, food support and the simple power of sharing food with your community.

Today they’ll be cooking a delicious rice and chilli dish to share with local residents and members of the wider community. 🍛 @rckfood4u

This week our green fingered residents also harvested the fruits of their labour from the roof garden! Look at the delicious and fresh courgette, lettuce and tomato! 🍅🥬

Hopfest Heroes! 🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️

Our annual #Hopfest is one of our favourite days of the year — and this year's superhero theme did not disappoint! Residents from across our almshouses came together in the beautiful courtyard gardens of Hopton Gardens in Blackfriars for a day of pure joy.

Raffles, live jazz, games, food, laughter — and some truly impressive superhero costumes. 🎷✨

A huge thank you to our estate agents @circaldn for so generously sponsoring the event, and to @stephenpierre8439 @ryan.d0negan @rafelliott and @dantainty for bringing the music to life with special performance by resident Shamus. Days like this are only possible because of the heros in our community!

Communities in the driving seat

Last week we hosted “Building a place-based funding ecosystem in Southwark” as part of London Funders Festival of Learning — bringing funders and local partners together to explore what a real, living funding ecosystem looks like in practice.

Not a pilot. Not a theory. A model with entry points for communities at every stage 👇

💡 @activecn Changemakers — seed funding for ideas not yet ready for a form, a portal, or a panel

🤝 Funding Differently with @cosouthwark — peer-led small grants (£5k–£10k) across Southwark, pooled from NHS and independent funders

🎯 Core Grants — trust-based, long-term core funding for established community organisations like @communitytechaid

Using a fishbowl format, we heard funders and local partners in conversation — then opened it up so everyone could pull up a chair and join in.

Huge thanks to our co-hosts London Funders, Active Communities Network and Community Southwark, to Julia Slay for facilitating, and to @blackfriarssettlement Settlement for hosting 🙏

It’s #LonelinessAwarenessWeek, and we want to highlight an activity that brings joy and connection to our Appleby Blue & St Saviour’s Court Almshouses every single week: Songs & Smiles by @together_proj ! 🎶👶

We all know that loneliness can affect anyone. However for older people in the UK, the risks of experiencing severe loneliness rise higher than other age groups.

We’re doing what we can to make sure our residents and people in our local community don’t feel lonely - which is where intergenerational activities come in!

When residents, babies, toddlers and parents visit us each week for Songs & Smiles, everyone lights up. Age gaps disappear, and the magic of connection takes over. And new parents can feel incredible lonely too – so its an equally beneficial activity for all generations..

We are so proud to partner with @together_proj to tackle loneliness together, one song and smile at a time.

Join our #ApplebyBlue Songs & Smiles sessions every Tuesday, 11am-12pm in Bermondsey.
