Ever wonder what the difference is between a landscape architect and an environmental planner? While both shape the world around us, their roles are rooted in different goals and tools.

Here's how they differ:
1️⃣ Focus: Landscape architects design beautiful, functional small-scale outdoor spaces. Environmental planners guide large-scale land use with sustainability and policy in mind.
2️⃣ Methods: Landscape architects sketch and model spaces; Environmental planners analyze data, maps, and regulations.
3️⃣ Pathways: Landscape architects need licensure and design degrees. Environmental planners often come from policy or science backgrounds.

Both are essential to building greener, more functional spaces. 🌎✨

Over fall break, things got wild in the studios! 🐾🎨

Becca Hanson and David Roberts from Studio Hanson | Roberts led students through our 3rd Annual Zoo Charrette. Students jumped into designing immersive habitats, learning how to balance animal needs with meaningful guest experiences. 🌿🐆

Huge thank you to SH|R for an inspiring charrette and Associate Professor Benjamin George for his dedication in giving students this incredible experience.

During Spencer Broberg's internship with Paragon Land Pros, he learned that it’s okay not to know everything and to make sure to communicate, ask questions, and seek guidance. Spencer built meaningful connections and now has a network that will be helpful throughout his career. 🤝

Congratulations to Associate Professor Benjamin George and his co-author Dave Gottwald at the University of Idaho on their new book, Disney and the Theming of the Contemporary Zoo: Kingdoms of Artifice which was released in hardcover by Bloomsbury Academic on October 1st. 🎉

The 1998 opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World introduced theme park design principles to wildlife display. Kingdoms of Artifice draws on their extensive interviews with over three dozen zoo designers and professionals, landscape architects, and former Disney Imagineers including @joerohde who was the project’s creative lead. They also visited nearly 50 zoos worldwide.

✨ Fun fact: October 1, 2026 is the 55th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney World!

Kade Williams interned at SLA Land Architects. He helped design turf sports fields and xeriscape for Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, worked on converting natural grass fields to synthetic turf while meeting topography, drainage, and safety requirements, and observed construction admin. He learned firsthand how important it is to maintain the project vision and reinforce goals around safety and water efficiency with contractors and stakeholders. 👷‍♂️🌱

🎉 Huge congratulations to David Anderson for being named as a 2026 ASLA Fellow! 🎉

This is the highest honor among ASLA members. It recognizes leaders whose work has made a lasting impact on communities, education, and the field of landscape architecture.

For over three decades, David has expanded the reach of landscape architecture at USU and beyond. As a Professional Practice Professor and Associate Vice Provost for Community Engagement, he’s helped thousands, from high schoolers to university students and civic leaders, to understand the power of design.

He’s arguably one of the profession’s most influential recruiters. Through LAEP 1030 (now CIVC 1610), he's believed to be the highest‑enrollment intro course in North America, David teaches 1,200+ students a year and has introduced 8,800+ learners to environmental stewardship and inclusive design. His leadership shaped the USU Botanical Center, a 100‑acre living laboratory he guided for 19 years and raised nearly $10 million to transform a degraded site into a regional hub for water‑wise gardens, wetlands, and LEED Platinum facilities.

Throughout his career, David has earned numerous awards, including the USU Presidential Award for Community Engagement and the NACTA Educator Award. His work has strengthened the profession’s legacy and deepened its impact on communities across Utah.

His impact continues to inspire the next generation of landscape architects and fellow colleagues! 🌿
