Aggie Engineers continue to outperform national averages on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam 🏆

The FE Exam is a major milestone on the path to professional engineering licensure, and USU students continue to set the standard for excellence.

The most recent pass rates include:

⚡ 100% in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Environmental Engineering
🏗️ 95% in Civil Engineering
⚙️ 94% in Mechanical Engineering

Since 2019, multiple USU engineering programs have consistently achieved pass rates between 80–100%, including several cohorts with perfect results across disciplines.

These outcomes reflect the college’s commitment to rigorous academic preparation, dedicated student support, and developing graduates who are ready to lead in professional engineering practice.

Congratulations, Aggie Engineers! This is something to be proud of.

What does the future of electrification look like for Utah? ⚡

The Utah Electrification Initiative brings research, industry expertise, and public-sector leadership together to advance transportation electrification across the state.

Led by ASPIRE, the Utah Electrification Initiative brings together leaders from transportation, economic development, and research to identify opportunities, address real-world challenges, and support the planning and implementation of electrification technologies that meet Utah’s needs.

Why does this matter? From freight movement and growing transportation demands to energy management and grid reliability, electrification presents opportunities to strengthen Utah’s infrastructure, support economic growth, and prepare for the future of mobility.

Through collaboration, data-driven planning, and real-world demonstrations, UEI is helping bridge the gap between research and deployment — turning emerging technologies into practical solutions for Utah’s communities, industries, and transportation networks.

Learn more about this initiative from the Chair of our steering committee, Carlos Braceras, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), and includes Jefferson Moss, commissioner of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development and CEO of the Nucleus Institute, and Regan Zane, CEO of ASPIRE. by @usuengineering

Yesterday, students, faculty, alumni, and members of the USU Engineering community gathered to unveil and dedicate the restored Tau Beta Pi Bent in honor of astronaut and USU alumna Mary L. Cleave. 🚀💙

The monument celebrates Mary’s remarkable accomplishments and the lasting inspiration she continues to provide to students, engineers, and the USU community. The ceremony highlighted her legacy, the history of the Tau Beta Pi Bent, and the restoration process, followed by the official unveiling.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in honoring Mary L. Cleave and celebrating her enduring legacy. ✨

How can Utah be better prepared for the next big earthquake? 🌎

The newly expanded Utah Earthquake Engineering Research Center at Utah State is bringing together experts from across multiple fields to study every aspect of earthquake safety. From how the ground responds to seismic activity to how buildings and infrastructure can be designed to better withstand earthquakes.

The center’s goal is to develop Utah-specific solutions that make buildings and infrastructure safer while reducing the time and cost of preparing for earthquakes. The center is also training the next generation of earthquake engineers and providing education for professionals in the field, including seismic design and post-earthquake building inspections.

Ultimately, the goal is to turn research into practical solutions that help Utah make better decisions before an earthquake happens and recover more quickly when one does.

Dr. Laura Luna, a geotechnical engineer at the center, researches how soil behaves during an earthquake and how those conditions can affect the buildings and infrastructure above it.

Last week, we celebrated the launch of our new Engineering Foundations program! 🎉

Students enjoyed a brief presentation and had the opportunity to meet the many people they may connect with throughout their Engineering Foundations journey. They also enjoyed a fun new engineering tradition✈️ and, of course, some delicious Aggie Ice Cream!🍦

We are so excited to see where this new program takes our students and look forward to supporting them as they build a strong foundation for success in engineering. We can’t wait to see all they accomplish!

We are excited to pioneer a new path forward with the creation of a common curriculum for all first-year engineers, beginning this fall.

Helping address a national concern about the retention of engineering students, the Engineering Foundations first-year program introduces students to multiple engineering professions, helping them choose a degree plan before selecting a major. This means students don’t have to arrive at USU already knowing what kind of engineer they want to be. Instead, they get to explore all their options.

Developed using an evidence-based framework shown to improve student success, the new curriculum provides the math, science, programming, and problem-solving skills needed for success in all engineering majors.

Engineering Foundations is the first program of its kind in Utah and one of few in the Western United States.

Did you know fungi are among the least understood organisms on Earth, and researchers are still uncovering new things about how these complex networks function?🍄‍🟫

USU Engineering professor Erika Espinosa-Ortiz and her team are investigating whether fungal networks use electrical activity to sense and respond in organized, meaningful ways. To support this innovative research, the team has received a $900,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation.

With this grant, Erika and her team will develop a non-invasive tool using genetically encoded fluorescent proteins. These proteins will change in brightness in response to variations in the electrical potential of fungal cell membranes, allowing researchers to observe electrical activity within fungi.
