Pairing technical expertise with business leadership, Francis Sommer has managed North America’s largest oil field, helped grow TNK-BP’s proved reserves more than fivefold and helped establish an international energy company producing over 600,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

And these are just a few highlights! This 2026 Distinguished Alumni Honoree has spent more than four decades building a global career in oil and gas.

Drawing from his own experience, Francis encourages PGE students to say yes to new challenges, roles and perspectives.

Austin native, Don Roesle knows that engineering expertise isn't built overnight. Over his 50-year career, he's worked across major producing basins in the U.S. and abroad, progressing from reservoir engineer to Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board at Ryder Scott.

The 2026 Distinguished Alumni Honoree credits much of his success to the foundation he built during his time at UT Austin, so it makes sense that he has shared his knowledge and experience with the University since the mid 90's. He previously served on the Advisory Board for PGE and is currently an active senior member of the Cockrell School of Engineering Advisory Board.

When asked what he'd tell current UT PGE students, Don emphasized two main principles: lead with integrity and keep learning from every experiences.

2026 Distinguished Alumni Honoree, Mojdeh Delshad is a research professor at UT PGE with more than 30 years experience in modeling–literally. While her research focuses on the simulation of enhanced oil recovery processes, her leadership impact extends well beyond her work in the subsurface.

She's peer reviewed over 150 conference papers, held various leadership roles in research groups and centers and continues to be a dedicated advisor for graduate students. Not to mention, she was the recipient of the 2026 SPE/AIME Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal for Technical Leadership!

Being able to contribute to the community and the future of petroleum engineering through research and mentorship is an aspect of her career that stands out the most.

Ahead of our Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner & Ceremony on October 16th, we asked our 2026 honorees to reflect on their careers, what this honor means to them and what advice they have for the next generation of PGE students.

For Manuel Rosales, the greatest measure of success is his impact on others. At @exxonmobil, he not only advances operational and technical excellence as Unconventional Continuous Improvement Manager but also strengthens the company's relationship with UT Austin as its Engagement Manager. From building high-performing teams to supporting recruitment events, advisory committees and mentorship opportunities, Manny fosters connections that improve the industry at every level.

And, his best advice reflects the value he places on relationships: stay connected and never underestimate the value of the PGE community.

Last Friday, PGE chowed down with great company at our EAC Student BBQ! 🍽️

Students had the opportunity to mingle over lunch with members of our 2026-2027 External Advisory Committee. It's one of our favorite traditions, connecting students with our board of industry professionals from oil and gas, sustainable energy, academia and the nonprofit sector whose perspectives help us improve our program. 🤘

Last week we welcomed the newest addition to the Forty Acres, the Autry C. Stephens Engineering Discovery Building (ACS) 🤘 This is a decade of investment in our engineering community, an $820 million commitment, including $215 million in philanthropy, to providing best-in-class places for our faculty, students, and staff to teach, learn, research and work.

This new building is 207,000 square feet of collaborative lab space, hands-on teaching labs, and modern classrooms designed to prepare the next generation of engineers. And it’s our third new building within a decade!

It will also be home to the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering and the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering!

Ahead of our ceremony on October 16th, we asked our 2026 Distinguished Alumni honorees to reflect on their careers, what this honor means to them and what advice they have for the next generation of PGE students.

For National Academy of Engineering member, James Brill, this recognition is a reminder of both his impact on generations of students and the technical excellence that defines petroleum engineering. His contributions to the field span academic leadership at @utulsa, ground breaking research in multiphase flow data and prediction modeling, and international oil and gas consulting.

Hear the takeaways from his 40+ year career at the link in our bio.
