Could air taxis help Austin paramedics beat traffic? 🚁

Professor Puneet Singh spoke with KXAN about how electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could help first responders reach patients faster.

From navigating traffic congestion to reaching locations that are difficult to access by road, these emerging aviation technologies could open new possibilities for emergency response.

Read the story and watch Singh’s interview at the link in our bio.

What better time to look toward the future of space than World Space Week?

This week, we’re celebrating the engineers, researchers and innovators helping shape what comes next in space exploration, including Texas Engineer Lori Magruder.

The aerospace engineering professor and director of UT Austin’s Center for Space Research has joined a statewide leadership team working to bring the new United States Space Academy to Texas.

The academy, led by @nasa, aims to help train the next generation of space professionals. And with Texas already home to a thriving aerospace ecosystem, Magruder says the state is well positioned to help lead this new era of space workforce development.

Magruder brings plenty of experience to the mission. She previously led the science team for NASA’s ICESat-2 mission, which has been measuring changes across Earth’s ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, forests and oceans since its 2018 launch.

You may have watched in awe as Artemis II launched back in April. What you didn't see were the many Longhorns behind the scenes that made the mission possible. 🚀

Learn about Lily Schueppert, BS ’24, a flight dynamics officer at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center; Judd Frieling, BS ’96, Life Member, leader of the ascent flight control team for Artemis II; and Emily Nelson, BS ’98, NASA’s chief flight director; and the roles they played in the Artemis II mission in the Alcalde. #LinkInBio by @utaerospace

What can today’s aerospace innovators learn from NASA’s earliest days?

We recently welcomed Dr. William C. Schneider to ASE/EM for a look back at his 38-year NASA career and the early engineering culture shaped by the Gemini and Apollo programs.

From a failed Gemini test to designing the Apollo 8 Lunar Test Article Backup to working on high-profile Space Shuttle design issues, Dr. Schneider shared firsthand stories of rapid innovation, hands-on engineering and the importance of learning from failure.

Thank you to Dr. Schneider for sharing his experiences and lessons with our students, faculty and aerospace community. 🚀 taken in UT Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics by @utaerospace

🤘 A tailgate worth celebrating!

ASE/EM students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends came together last weekend to cheer on the Longhorns as Texas took on Ohio State.

And what a way to kick off our first ASE/EM tailgate: a 24-23 comeback victory that ended a nearly 20-year drought against the Buckeyes! 🧡

Thanks to everyone who came out, grabbed some Cabo Bob’s, showed off their Longhorn spirit and helped make it a great afternoon!

Now, let’s beat the Roadrunners!

🤖 What if spacecraft could make decisions for themselves?

That’s one of the questions driving the research of Dr. Ethan Burnett, who joined ASE/EM as an assistant professor in January.

Burnett studies spacecraft guidance, control and astrodynamics, developing new computational approaches that could help spacecraft autonomously plan and adjust their trajectories as missions venture farther from Earth. 🚀

His work spans everything from satellite servicing and spacecraft rendezvous to future human and robotic missions in deep space. He’s also explored the dynamics of Jupiter’s moon Europa, bringing together aerospace engineering, mathematics and space science.

Now at UT Austin, Burnett is excited to teach, collaborate and work with the next generation of aerospace engineers.
