Phragmites is an invasive species that grows along the shorelines of Great Salt Lake that consumes hundreds of thousands of acre feet of water each year. We are grateful to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their generous contribution to help fight phragmites and preserve Great Salt Lake by @utahdwr
It’s Halloween AND Bat Week, so we are celebrating our extremely important nighttime neighbors. Bats are some of Utah’s coolest (and most misunderstood) creatures! We monitor bats yearly across the entire state to track their distribution, abundance, health and any potential threats.🦇 Fun facts about Utah’s bats: · Utah is home to 18 species of bats! · Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. · Bats aren’t blind! While they do rely on echolocation to navigate, they actually see quite well. · Utah’s native bat species don’t drink blood. They typically eat moths, mosquitoes and even scorpions! · Bats help keep our ecosystems healthy through pollination, seed dispersal and natural pest control. Safety reminder: While most bats don’t carry rabies, never touch or pick up a bat. This Bat Week, remember that bats may have a spooky reputation, but they’re some of nature’s best helpers! #BatWeek #UtahWildlife #Halloween #UtahBats by @utahdwr
Join us for a free wildlife-watching event on Saturday, Nov. 7 (from 4-6 p.m.) at the Nash Wash Wildlife Management Area in east-central Utah. November is a great time to spot mule deer! As deer migrate to lower elevations in search of food, their breeding season — also known as the rut — is underway. The bucks will pursue does and compete with other males, making it an ideal time to observe and photograph these animals in their natural habitat. While the event is free, it is limited to 75 people and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Register at the link in our bio. #MuleDeer #Utah #Wildlife #WildlifeViewing #Deer by @utahdwr

Flights over Great Salt Lake help the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources track the brine shrimp harvest and study where birds gather. This work helps monitor an industry that supplies feed for shrimp and fish hatcheries around the world while maintaining a food source for migratory birds.   Thank you to our biologists, conservation officers, and brine shrimp harvesters who work together to care for this remarkable Utah resource. Join us on a treasure hunt. 🪎 🐚 Tucked under the silt in Utah’s freshwater rivers and streams lives an unsung ecological powerhouse: the native winged floater (Anodonta nuttalliana). By filtering water, cycling nutrients and participating in the movement of life through the ecosystem, they help create conditions that benefit many other species. by @utahdwr
*Exclaims in Smokey Bear*: “Only YOU can… help us track the spread of chronic wasting disease!” That’s right. It’s almost that time of year when we need deer hunters to stop at our designated check stations and submit a sample for CWD disease testing. Samples are specifically being requested if you harvest a deer in one of the 18 designated units, three of which have mandatory testing. Read more about where and how to do the testing at the link in our bio. by @utahdwr
