Top 10 + Fall Colors Viewing - Utah Scenic Drives - List
-
When will fall colors arrive?
What's your favorite fall colors scenic drive?
See info. below!
-
We drove the Nebo Loop last night and the colors are not materializing on that route, yet. We suggest driving that route in another 10-days to two-weeks.
-
Fall color in Utah is running a bit late and uneven this year mainly because of warm September weather and a weak 2025–26 winter snowpack.
-
Leaves change when nights cool and days shorten enough to shut down chlorophyll. A stretch of warm days and mild nights delays that trigger.. Drought from the poor snowpack complicates it. The result is a patchy start rather than a statewide wave. Highest elevations with better soil moisture should still color well; lower canyons and valleys are more delayed. Peak mountain color is still expected late September into early October.
-
From the top of Utah to the bottom, here's our Top 10 (Plus) scenic drives for fall colors viewing:
1- Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (US-89) — Logan
2- Ogden River Scenic Byway (SR-39) — Ogden
3- Big Cottonwood Canyon Road (SR-190) — Salt Lake City
4- Guardsman Pass Road — Park City
5- Alpine Loop Scenic Byway (SR-92) — Provo
6- Nebo Loop Scenic Byway — Payson / Nephi
7- Energy Loop / Huntington–Eccles Canyons Scenic Byway (SR-31) — Ephraim
8- Flaming Gorge–Uintas Scenic Byway (US-191) — Vernal
9- La Sal Mountain Loop Road — Moab
10- Abajo Loop Road — Monticello
11- Capitol Reef Scenic Drive — Torrey
12- Scenic Byway 12 (Boulder Mountain) — Boulder
13- Utah’s Patchwork Parkway (SR-143) — Panguitch
14- Bryce Canyon Scenic Drive (SR-63) — Bryce Canyon City
15- Beaver Canyon Scenic Byway (SR-153) — Beaver
16- Markagunt High Plateau Scenic Byway (SR-14) — Cedar City

Swing Arm City - Where Off-Road Adventures Meets the Moon
-
Over the past seven to eight years Bob Grove and Mark Wade have worked together as tourism marketing consultants, introducing the world to various Utah destinations through both KSL Outdoors Radio and TV outdoor programs. Working with Adam Eakle and Jared Hargrave of KSL Outdoors (TV) Bob has frequently coordinated destination content and itineraries for this weekly Utah outdoors television show. Going through some of our video files, we just came across some video clips we had not previously shared on our social channels before about the motorized recreation destination of Swing Arm City.
-
Just off Highway 24 west of Hanksville, Utah, Swing Arm City looks like another planet and rides like one too. This 2,600-acre BLM open-play zone is sculpted from gray bentonite clay—steep ridges, natural bowls, drop-offs, and jumps with Factory Butte rising behind you.
-
No marked trails. Just you, the clay, and whatever you brought: dirt bikes sending the big lines, ATVs and UTVs carving the ridges, and 4x4s working the flats. Stay off it after rain. The rest of the time, it’s one of the most unique motorized landscapes in Utah.
-
A swingarm is the pivoting rear-suspension arm that holds a dirt bike’s rear wheel. Swing Arm City’s bentonite hills are packed with steep faces, razor ridges, natural bowls, and some of the biggest jumps in the desert. Hard landings and high-speed hits on that clay are brutal on rear suspension. Riders started saying the place would “break swingarms,” and the nickname Swing Arm City (also written Swingarm City) followed. Tourism and BLM materials later adopted the name riders were already using. You’ll also hear the same ground called Caineville or lumped in with Factory Butte. “Swing Arm City” specifically refers to the open-play clay hills themselves.

Secrets of the Dirty Devil
-
Deep in the remote canyon country of southeastern Utah, the Dirty Devil River winds through a rugged maze of steep-walled canyons and hidden draws. This isolated basin, named by explorer John Wesley Powell for its muddy, saline waters, offered near-perfect cover for western outlaws. Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and their Wild Bunch (along with earlier horse thieves and rustlers) used the labyrinth of side canyons—especially the legendary Robbers Roost—as a nearly impregnable hideout in the late 1800s.
-
Poison Spring served as a critical passageway, one of the few routes allowing access to the river from both sides and a likely thoroughfare for those who knew how to navigate this forbidding maze of canyons.

Two-Night Utah Mountain Escape - Part 1
-
For two nights last week I explored the high mountains of central Utah, at 9,000 feet, where the air was more smoke free and the mountain biking trails were calling, and the wildlife showed up.
-
While several nearby forest fires pushed smoke into the valleys, I stayed above it all, near Huntington Reservoir in central Utah. From this elevated perch, I captured photos and video of Utah’s incredible mountain scenery and wildlife, then explored mountain trails on my bike for some high-country riding.
-
This 3-minute film is part one ofo a 2-part series and is pure outdoor Utah: alpine views, quiet mornings, mountain biking, and the kind of wildlife moments that make you stop and just watch. Check out my compact off-road camper that makes the experience even more comfortable.
-
If you love Utah outdoors, mountain photography, wildlife encounters, or high-elevation trail riding, this one’s for you.

Ants - Utah's Fossil Hunters
-
Ever noticed those little rocky antihill mounds scattered across the Utah terrain? The region that encompasses Capitol Reef National Park is filled with them. They are harvester ant homes — and these tiny insects are accidental fossil hunters!
-
Eons ago, this part of Utah was covered by an inland sea. Sharks swam here, and when they died, their teeth got buried in the mud that later turned into rock. Today, hardworking harvester ants dig deep tunnels for their nests. As they haul dirt and pebbles to the surface, they sometimes also bring up those ancient shark teeth. One busy ant colony can turn up dozens of shark teeth that would otherwise stay hidden underground.
-
Next time you’re exploring the Capitol Reef region, take a closer look at those ant mounds. Remember to keep a safe distance as they can sting! You might be looking at a little piece of prehistoric ocean history, delivered by Utah's smallest construction crew.
