Kaikai Kiki Gallery @kaikaikikigallery is participating in Art Fair Tokyo 2026 @artfairtokyo . At our booth (S029), we are presenting a new work by Utanhole @utanhole . This painting is based on the composition of “Allegory of Love” by the Mannerist painter Agnolo Bronzino. Regarding this work, Utanhole explains: “In Bronzino’s brushwork, I sensed a kind of cold, detached perspective that seems to transcend human emotion. That feeling became the starting point for this work; I began wondering what it might look like if the realities of contemporary Japan were depicted from such a perspective. The title of this painting is “Ka-Cho-Fu-Getsu (Flower, Bird, Wind and Moon) -Requiem for the Damned-”. The term “Ka-Cho-Fu-Getsu” refers to the beauty of nature, such as flowers, birds, wind, and moon, yet it also suggests things that pass and transform independently of human emotions or intentions. In a sense, everyone simply lives and dies within this inevitable flow of nature, unable to resist it. What I wanted to depict was that very gravity itself. The preview for “Art Fair Tokyo 2026” @artfairtokyo begins on March 12, (Thu). At Kaikai Kiki Gallery’s @kaikaikikigallery booth (S029), we will present “Perfect Salvation Initiation II” a new work by Utanhole @utanhole . This painting is based on a device modeled after an actual religious apparatus. The device was reportedly used in spiritual training and claimed to “synchronize the wearer’s brainwaves with those of the religious leader.” Utanhole created a replica of this device and photographed herself and others wearing it. The painting was then produced based on that photograph. Regarding the motivation behind depicting this device, Utanhole explains: “The reason I wanted to paint this device is that the idea of synchronizing brainwaves stems from a desire that is not particularly unusual, the desire to share the same sensations as someone you admire. The device’s distinctive form, with its colorful cords intricately intertwined, seemed to suggest how a fundamentally pure human desire can be translated into reality in unexpected ways.
