CJ faculty attended the University Faculty Awards Ceremony in the Wolford Center yesterday evening to celebrate the 2025-2026 Faculty Awardees. Congratulations to Dr. Hancock for being the recipient of the Tenure-Track Excellence in Teaching and the Tenure-Track Excellence in Service Award.

Our CJ faculty and staff attended the College of Arts and Sciences Awards Luncheon yesterday. Huge shout out to the @utc_cas team for a wonderful event! We wanted to congratulate Dr. Denney on receiving the Outstanding Faculty Advising of the Year Award and Dr. Hancock on receiving the Early Career Researcher of the Year Award. 🎉 Congratulations to all of the CAS faculty and staff awardees as well!

Dr. Hancock’s MSCJ Sexual Victimization class worked with @utc_titleix to complete zines for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. As part of the class, her students choose group members and select a book, of their choosing, to read that addresses sexual violence in some way. Their final product from this book club was to design zines (magazine form of artwork) about their chosen book. Swipe to see their finished products and guess what books they read in the comments! Dr. Garland’s Advanced Community Engagement course is partnering with Love, Period-Chattanooga to collect menstrual products to help combat period poverty among students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Period poverty refers to the lack of consistent access to menstrual products due to financial barriers. For students, this can mean missing class, stretching products longer than recommended, or having to choose between basic necessities like food, housing, and hygiene.

Why this matters:
Nearly 1 in 5 college students in the U.S. have experienced period poverty at some point (Gordon, 2023).

About 14% of college students report being unable to afford menstrual products in the past year, with an additional 10% experiencing this issue monthly.

They are accepting unopened pads, tampons, liners, and other menstrual care products. All donated items will go to Scrappy’s Cupboard, which provides essential resources directly to UTC students in need.

They will be collecting donations through Wednesday, April 22. Donation boxes are located at:
· 540 McCallie
· Holt Hall
· Lupton Hall
· University Center

Products may also be brought to Dr. Garland’s office at 540 McCallie (# 454).
