K H E Y E C H I S H ? is back in Mumbai

🥨 September 13 | 7 PM
🥨 @studiotamaasha

K H E Y E C H I S H ? begins with a question we grew up hearing, "Ate?" or "Had food?" and unfolds into a darkly funny, deeply intimate theatre experience set in a metro city. It follows a young woman who measures her own hunger, born of chosen migration, against her grandmother’s hunger which was shaped by forced migration and famine. Across generations, the play examines how displacement, work, debt, dignity, and memory influence what and how we eat.

With live cooking on stage, the play carries stories of survival through famine-born dishes like Alu Posto and Phena Bhaat.

Inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s poem 'The Shopper', Kheyechish? is a play about hunger, hustle, home, and the quiet inheritances we live with.

After a long wait, T H E A P O L O G Y returns to the stage...

“My Guru is long dead; he will never say the words that I have longed to hear, hence it must be imagined.”

But what is a true apology? Are there steps to it? And is an apology enough?

Through her own inner sanctum, she crafted an apology imagined, tailored for her, by her, to her, channeling her revered Guru. Questioning the brutality of a teaching system claiming deep-rooted tradition but trembling for survival in the modern world, she awakened. Those who bore the torch shattered her, yet the classical dance form itself set her free. Subverting its form, she rediscovered her body, reclaiming it after years of exile. Shedding the shackles, she exhaled, “Old man, be gone.”

The Apology is a response to Eve Ensler’s novella with the same name, and was created under the support of The DSM Niloufer Sagar Alumni Production Grant.

It is an honour for the team of Kheyechish? to be featured in @sakalmedia. My heartfelt gratitude to @neelasharma253 ma’am for taking the time to watch our little play and write about it with such care and attention to detail.

Thank you @akvariouslive for being such champions, and thank you @mccpune and @slr_blackbox for making this possible.

This interview was such a joy, not just because @dipanita listened so deeply to the story of 'Kheyechish?', but because she brought a treasure trove of her own stories too. It became a conversation that will stay with me long after.

Here, she calls Pune my hometown, and no one has ever said that to me before. Being Bengali and growing up in so many places, amidst so many languages, I never quite noticed when Pune quietly became home. Which makes this show feel different, and a little more nerve wracking, because now 'Kheyechish?' will be performed in front of my people, my hometown.

Grateful to @akvariouslive @slr_blackbox @mccpune and to @dsmumbai and NSAPG for supporting this little story.

Bhetuya!
