@cagovernor @gavinnewsom‘s decision to shift control of the California Department of Education from the
elected State Superintendent to the governor’s office is a troubling overreach.

Governor Newsom cannot claim to fight for democracy while actively pushing to strip voters in his own state of their democratic voice in electing an independent, nonpartisan state
superintendent to run the Department of Education and set the direction of education policy for school districts across California.

Governor Newsom also cannot claim to fight for public education and the children of California by withholding nearly $4 billion in funds that the people of California democratically voted to dedicate to public education through Prop 98.

Our message to Governor Newsom is this:

As you consider a bid for the highest office in this country, do you want your legacy to be defined by underfunding schools, shortchanging students, and actively undermining the will of
voters in your own state?

Or do you want it to be standing in defense of democracy and public education?

If it’s the latter, you should respect the voices of educators and families, rather than telling us to
take a back seat. by @utlanow

United Teachers Los Angeles demands justice and accountability for the unchecked violence and killings in our communities by federal immigration agents, and an end to militarization and occupation here and abroad.

This reckless administration continues to wreak havoc, violence, and trauma on the people of this country and other nations under the guise of “public safety.”

The reality is that this administration has created a public safety crisis by enabling armed and masked agents to use force and violence to criminalize and racially profile immigrants and US citizens, target marginalized communities, and prevent people from upholding constitutional rights.

The brutality must end, especially at a time when local, state, and federal officials have consistently called on the federal government to invest in the resources working families truly need — education, health care, housing, access to food — instead of indiscriminate terror in our communities.

We demand justice for those who have been abducted by ICE and those who are now missing.

We demand justice for those shot, some losing their lives, at the hands of ICE agents: Keith Porter Jr., Renee Nicole Good, Silverio Villegas González, Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras, and Luis David Nico Moncada.

We demand justice for the heartbreaking trauma inflicted upon their loved ones.

We demand justice for the terror inflicted upon our communities.

ICE out of LA. ICE out of every city. End the militarization and occupation of our neighborhoods, our communities (and now even our SCHOOLS), and of those in nations abroad. by @utlanow

Why does it matter who sits on City Council?

A major driver of the declining enrollment in LAUSD is how expensive it is to live in LA. The cost of living has gotten so out of control that families struggle to afford rent or are forced to leave Los Angeles.

We need city leaders who will improve quality of life for Angelenos and stand up to the corporate landlords, tech companies, and industrial polluters that profit off our city and pay nothing back. by @utlanow
