In 2020, a routine heart scan revealed something unexpected for Dr. Jochen Reiser. He was healthy, active, and a physician who understood the science. Yet that small warning sign gave him something many people never get. Time to make changes before a serious health issue emerged.

That experience reinforced a powerful belief that is helping shape the future of healthcare at UTMB: some of the most important care happens long before someone becomes a patient.

Today, The University of Texas Medical Branch is helping redefine what it means to live a long, healthy life. From advancing preventive care and early risk detection to investing in community partnerships, like Blue Zones Project Galveston(@bzpgalveston), that support healthier lifestyles, we are working to improve not only lifespan, but healthspan, the years people spend healthy, active, and thriving.

Because the future of healthcare isn't just about treating illness. It's about helping people stay well.

September was a whirlwind for our Community Engagement team!

From women’s empowerment events with the Texas City/LaMarque Chamber and the Galveston Women’s Conference to other community gatherings focused on health, wellness and connection, the month was filled with opportunities to engage with people across the region.

Mobile mammogram outreach also helped reinforce the importance of breast health and preventive care as we head into October and Women’s Health Month.

We’re grateful for a busy month of community connection and look forward to what the fall season brings!
