It’s official! University of Toronto Mississauga’s new student residence will be ready as planned for move-in day on September 4.

The university officially received occupancy approval from the city, and we are excited to welcome students into this new space. This is the first residence building to open at UTM since 2007. To commemorate this news, we would like to share some initial photos of the building.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day; a day to honour Survivors of the residential school system, the children who never returned home, their families and communities, and the ongoing impacts of the residential school system.

As part of our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we have been working to discontinue the term “res” when referring to Residence.

This change reflects feedback from our campus and local community, as well as our ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive and respectful language and spaces. It also represents our continued learning as a department about the importance and impact of language.

The terms “rez” and “res” carry cultural significance connected to Indigenous communities and histories and may be inappropriate when used casually to describe student housing. Their use can unintentionally overlook the context in which these terms originated and the experiences of Indigenous communities.

Our first measure of change took place earlier this year by updating our email to residence.utm@utoronto.ca, as well as encouraging the use of "residence services desk" as apposed to "res desk". This is a small step towards a much larger goal of systemic change.

As part of this intentional shift, we will continue using more neutral and respectful language such as “residence” and “housing,” and we encourage others to do the same

Truth and Reconciliation extends beyond September 30 and requires ongoing engagement throughout the year. You can support reconciliation by
🔸 learning the history between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and the impact of Residential Schools
🔸exploring the unique intersections between treaty, constitutional, Indigenous and human rights in Canada and Ontario
🔸recognizing the rich contributions that Indigenous peoples have made to Canada and Ontario
🔸taking action to address historical injustices and present-day wrongs
🔸teaching others
