Hard to believe it's been a year since the dedication of a statue in memory of our college's benefactor Carlos Alvarez, one of the university's most transformative philanthropic supporters.

The college was named in his honor in 2021, becoming the first named college at UT San Antonio. Alvarez, founder of The Gambrinus Company, was a legendary businessman and prominent community leader.

Alvarez alumnus Walt Downing, MBA ’86 has had a front row seat to the rapid-fire technological changes that have occurred during his 52-year engineering career.

Just this spring, Downing retired as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), where he established and led SwRI’s Aerospace and Training Systems Division before transitioning into executive leadership.
