Lezen een stoffig imago? Sinds de prominente online aanwezigheid van it-girls als Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa en Kaia Gerber met een boek in hun hand, heeft dat beeld een flinke knauw gekregen.Op hun social media poseren deze celebrities regelmatig met een boek aan het zwembad, op een jacht of in een koffietentje. Paparazzi betrappen hen vaak met een dikke pil onder de arm. Hierdoor wordt het boek neergezet als een hip modeaccessoire, ziet letterkundige Dr. Aafje de Roest (UvA), die onderzoek doet naar de trend. Volgens haar presenteren deze it-girls lezen “niet alleen als een intellectuele praktijk, maar ook als een esthetische praktijk". Tegelijkertijd gebruiken ze het boek ook om hun eigen imago van “oppervlakkige celebrity” te draaien. De online leesbeweging heeft bovendien invloed op de jonge volgers van deze vrouwen. Met hun boekenclubs bereiken sterren als Dua Lipa en Reese Witherspoon namelijk miljoenen mensen, die dankzij hun tips worden gestimuleerd om ook te gaan lezen. Daarnaast heeft het een belangrijk effect op het algemene beeld dat er van lezen bestaat, zegt Aafje. Lezen wordt zo “iets dat hot en en aantrekkelijk is".Ook de modewereld haakt slim aan op deze trend. Bladen als Vogue en Harper’s Bazaar werken al langer samen met het literaire universum, maar je ziet deze link nu steeds vaker terugkomen in o.a. items van Dior en Coach. Van tassen in de vorm van een boek tot daadwerkelijke boekjes die je aan je tas kunt hangen. by @uva_humanities

The UvA Library has won the Amsterdam Architecture Prize 2026.Our stunning new University Library in the University Quarter was awarded Amsterdam’s most prestigious architecture prize, recognizing outstanding design, craftsmanship, and social impact in the city. The prize is organized annually by Arcam, the Amsterdam Centre for Architecture. The Library is the result of a project that took more than 25 years of planning, development, and realization. It brings together the historic former Binnengasthuis hospital buildings with a striking new wing and spectacular glass-roofed atrium, creating a modern learning environment while preserving the site’s rich history. The building was designed by architects Roberto Meyer of MVSA Architects and André van Stigt of Architectenbureau J. van Stigt. Need a quiet place to study this weekend or during Whit Monday? Good news: the Bushuis at the University Quarter will be open on 23, 24 and 25 May from 09:00 to 18:00, with 335 extra study spots available across multiple rooms and study areas.At Roeterseiland Campus, additional study spaces will also be available on 23 and 24 May from 09:00 to 23:00, and on 25 May from 09:00 to 22:00. Extended opening hours will apply to several campus locations during the holiday weekend, so you can keep studying without interruption.Want to avoid crowded spaces? Afraid it will be hard to find a study space? We have good news for you.During this exam period, you will have more than 500 study spaces to choose from.And exactly where they are needed most.During the busy exam long weekend, including Monday 25 May, extra study spaces will be available. The Bushuis will remain open, and the Library on Roeterseiland Campus will open additional tutorial rooms in Building E.From Tuesday 26 May, almost 300 more study spaces will become available in Buildings J/K on Roeterseiland Campus.But there is even more.Library locations will stay open longer during the exam period.
