Jasper van Alderwegen is an artist born and based on unceded Lekwungen and WÁNEĆ Territories also known as Victoria, BC. His practice explores abstraction, illusion, and multiplicity as they shape modern identity and social structure under late-stage capitalism, typically working through painting and sound. His process emphasizes experimentation and inexpert handling, using traditional methods imperfectly to foreground spontaneity, contradiction, and emergence. His recent oil paintings abstract and destabilize the visual language of heraldry and vexillology.
Reimagining the blazon as a vessel for uncertainty and hope rather than authority, these works undermine the promise of fixed identity and legibility. Soft geometry, misaligned grids, wandering lines, erasures, and provisional marks replace stable symbols, allowing new forms to emerge that remain open, contradictory, and unknowable. This approach extends into sound installation, where musical notation becomes a form of drawing and scores operate as visual and spatial structures. By diluting and reinterpreting inherited systems of order, van Alderwegen’s work acknowledges history while holding space for ambiguity and utopian possibility. @vanalderwegen

The BFA grad class presents Where Do We Begin?, the first show of the year in The Mezzanine (Visual Arts Building). Every two weeks, a new show will take place on the upper floor of the VA Building, featuring a rotating selection of works from our graduating class.

Featuring five artists’ explorations into the human experience, Where Do We Begin? delves into questions surrounding the familiar and alien, the curiosity that binds us as humans, and the ways in which we seek to explain and interpret the world around us. Through personal experiences of friendship, religion, environment and culture, each work offers a unique perspective and opportunity for viewers to consider these themes for themselves.

Callie Clissold-Hoyle, Rhaine Lyon, Michelle Butterfield, Julie Lacasse, and Sadie Pollock Shepherd provide works that showcase their skills both technically and conceptually. Featuring a combination of painting, sculpture, and print - from representative to surreal - Where Do We Begin? reflects our curious human nature back at us.

Where Do We Begin? runs from October 13th-24th on the second floor of the the Visual Arts building, open daily 8am-10pm. taken in University of Victoria, Visual Arts by @uvicarts

🎻 An exciting quartet, and a homecoming!

We’re thrilled to welcome the award-winning Katarina String Quartet to UVic for their debut performance! 🌟

Winners of the 2025 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition Grand Prize, this dynamic young ensemble is making waves across North America with performances that bring fresh energy and perspective to the string quartet tradition. They’ve recently completed a two-year residency at The Juilliard School and are now Quartet in Residence at the New England Conservatory.

Their program travels across more than 200 years of music, from Haydn and Beethoven to the vibrant sounds of Canadian composer Vivian Fung’s Spiraling and the traditional Acadian folk tune L’Acadien d’Acadie. And there’s a special connection to UVic: first violinist Jeanel Liang is a School of Music alumna! 💛

📅 Thursday, October 15 | 8 PM
📍 Phillip T. Young Recital Hall, UVic
🎟️ Pay What You Can: $14–$38
