Congratulations, students, on another capstone publication! Hard work and dedication pay off! Dr. Marilyn Brandt said, "I am very excited and proud to announce the publication of the attached paper, Rommelfanger et al. 2026, in the leading marine science journal Frontiers in Marine Science. This paper is the result of a capstone project completed in the spring of 2023 by the 2022 cohort of the UVI Master of Marine and Environmental Science (MMES) program, with the first 12 authors being the graduate students from that cohort. Congratulations to these students, especially Ms. Kaitlin Rommelfanger who led the effort!

This publication is a wonderful testament to what our students can achieve. It is also a timely recognition of the program's impact as MMES welcomes its 20th cohort of graduate students. I officially graduated with my Professional Science Master’s in Marine and Environmental Science from UVI! This past 2 years has pushed me, shaped me, and reminded me why I’m so passionate about protecting our oceans and environment, especially for our island communities. From research to outreach to unforgettable experiences in and out of the water, I’ve grown so much along the way. Grateful for everyone who supported me through it all. This is just the beginning ✨

I recently had the opportunity to tour UVI’s MacLean Marine Science Center on the OEK Campus, where I saw the state-of-the-art labs and research spaces and met the incredible team that plays an important role in maintaining the university’s marine and environmental programs. Senior Maura Richardson was my guide for the tour, showing me how the center supports UVI scientists and students working on marine ecology, coral and mangrove restoration, deep-reef ecosystems, sea turtle research, and robotics and AI in environmental studies.

We are thrilled to welcome our new students starting their Masters degree journey in the MMES program at UVI. After a weeklong orientation where they toured our Orville E. Kean campus, inland and coastal habitats of St. Thomas, heard from numerous faculty, staff, and alumni, and enjoyed a cookout at Brewers Bay beach, they are ready for class on Monday.
