A Sharp Comedy about Art, Love & Ambition!
UVM Program in Theatre and Dance presents “Bernhardt/Hamlet”.
Mark Twain wrote: “There are five kinds of actresses: bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses, great actresses – and then there is Sarah Bernhardt.” In 1899, the international stage celebrity set out to tackle her most ambitious role yet: “Hamlet”. Theresa Rebeck’s Broadway hit rollicks with high comedy and human drama, set against the lavish Shakespearean production that could make or break Bernhardt’s career.

Sarah Bernhardt played a significant role in launching both the career of the famed Czech artist Alphonse Mucha and the Art Nouveau movement as a whole. Bernhardt first collaborated with Mucha in late 1894 when they met by chance, and she commissioned him to paint a last-minute poster for her production of Sardou’s “Gismonda” at Paris’ Théâtre de la Renaissance. See Mucha played by Aiden Blow in our production of “Bernhardt/Hamlet.”

Edmond Rostand, an artistic collaborator and rumored lover of Sarah Bernhardt, debuted his work “Cyrano de Bergerac” in 1897 to instant success. On opening night, the show received an hour of applause and 42 curtain calls. See him played by Adam Smith in our production of “Bernhardt/Hamlet.”

Sarah Bernhardt used a real human skull in her 1899 production of Hamlet. The skull, which she named “Lazarus,” was inscribed with French verse and was gifted to her in 1877 by her frequent artistic collaborator Victor Hugo. When not playing the role of Yorick onstage, the skull most often resided atop Bernhardt’s dressing room vanity. See Arden Gonzalez as Sarah in our production of “Bernhardt/Hamlet.”
