POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We’re excited to see one of our very own Impact Fellows featured on President Jon Anderson’s podcast, A Place for You!

In this episode, President Anderson sits down with Yissella Bringhurst, a senior public health student and one of our Impact Fellows this year! Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Yissella shares her journey to UVU, how she discovered the Center for Social Impact, and how experiences with service and research have shaped her path.

Last year, Yissella won our Design for Impact Research Competition, earning a trip to the Stanford University @stanforddschool! That experience inspired her to apply to become an Impact Fellow, and now she’s continuing her social impact journey as a Social Change Design Fellow, exploring belonging within the Latino community in Orem.

Yissella’s story is a powerful reminder of how opportunities to learn, connect, and engage with our communities can inspire students to create meaningful change. We’re so proud to have her as part of our CSI family! 🌎💚

Our winning UVU Design for Impact 2026 team - Yissella Bringhurst, Mery Deilaire, and Diego Martinez Cardenas - just got back from the trip they won to Silicon Valley where they hit several design museums downtown San Francisco, the @stanforddschool at Stanford University, and UX design for good organization @bridgegoodorg in Oakland! Yissella, Mery, and Diego won first place in our spring semester competition, addressing extreme political polarization through both a physical and digital interactive community exhibit called The Civic Quilt (https://civicquilt.netlify.app). We are so proud of our social design thinkers and can’t wait to see how they further develop their idea and prototype! If you’re interested in participating in the next Design for Impact, make sure to follow our stories and subscribe to our newsletter to be alerted when registration opens. by @uvusocialimpact

Each year the UVU Center for Social Impact mentors and hosts student teams hailing from a wide range of academic majors to take part in Oxford University’s @skollcentre Map the System competition. This year, Abigail Brown and Gwen Martin won SECOND PLACE on the global stage at Oxford out of dozens of teams hailing from countries on every continent besides Antarctica. Their research focused on Biometric Surveillance of Latin American Immigrants in the United States. Abbie Fisher provided graphic data-modeling and visual storytelling support. José Sorcia supported on the research and presentation for the UVU local competition. We are so proud of our brilliant systems thinkers who are making waves internationally! If you’re interested in participating in Map the System this year, make sure to follow our stories so that you can register next month. by @uvusocialimpact
