From growing crops to treating wastewater and exploring new approaches to kidney care, UW Engineering researchers are turning to a versatile material to solve very different problems: hydrogels. 💧

In @uw_cee professor Mari Winkler’s lab, researchers are adapting hydrogels — soft, flexible materials that can hold large amounts of liquid — to carry beneficial microbes, capture toxins and much more.

Their projects include biodegradable "BioBeads" that support plant growth, hydrogel systems that help wastewater plants remove pollutants, drinkable solutions designed to capture toxins in the gut, and early-stage approaches to producing biofuel and growing carbon-capturing algae.

“There is a core concept to each of these different threads that makes [hydrogels] feel like a community technology. It feels like the future,” says CEE doctoral researcher Renee Davis.
