Researchers from a range of specialties are developing ways to hijack live cells' and bioengineered materials' ability to sense and interpret signaling inputs. Professor Cole DeForest, his students, and University of Washington alumni collaborated on a review of the ways they engineer these processes, known as biocomputation. It was published earlier this week in Nature Chemical Engineering. Find out more at: https://www.nature.com/articles/s44286-026-00433-9

Check it out!

The @uofwa has established our first-ever, full-time location on @microsoft’s campus in Redmond.

Dedicated to preparing students and professionals to lead responsibly in an era of disruptive technological change, it will serve as the new permanent home for the UW’s Global Innovation Exchange, a globally recognized engineering and business institute for emerging and established technology leaders.

It is funded with a $42 million in-kind contribution from Microsoft. Find out more: https://www.washington.edu/news/2026/09/30/uw-establishes-new-home-on-microsofts-redmond-campus/ An arcing room includes a sign with a UW logo and stadium-style seats. by @uwbioengineering

More congratulations are in order! BioE senior Elijah Kashman has been named a Washington Research Foundation Fellow. At Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Elijah investigates therapeutic resistance to PARP inhibitors, which can selectively kill cancer cells. He works with Dr. Richard Adeyemi and Dr. Adam Cheng.

We'll host Columbia University's Professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic for this year's Allan S. Hoffman Lecture. Join us in person or Zoom, October 8, at 4pm Pacific. The lecture will focus on the translational potential of tissue engineering in regenerative medicine aimed at repairing or replacing tissues at the clinical scale and in disease modeling using microscale organs-on-chip that recapitulate organ-level and systemic functions.

“Did you remember to take your medicine?” You’ve probably been asked that question or asked it of a friend or family member. It’s for good reason. Taking your medicine at the right time, the proper dose, and the full course of your prescription is critical to its success. And failing to adhere to that guidance is very common.

Professor Ayokunle Olanrewaju is designing a new generation of tests to improve drug adherence. The work is backed by a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

UW Bioengineering Professor Wendy Thomas and Stanford Professor Taia Wang revealed that mechanical forces can shape how antibodies interact with immune cells, opening new ways to think about cancer treatments. Their work, which also included UW Bioengineering alumnus Casey Kiyohara, was recently published in the journal Immunity.

The team set up and used a fluidics platform to study how mechanical forces in the circulatory system cause drag on immune cells and impact how they interact with therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. The platform allows them to adjust the rate at which fluid is moving, changing the biomechanical force between the immune cells and an antibody-coated surface that models an antibody-coated tumor. Most significantly, it lets them ask how much flow it takes to detach an immune cell from that surface.

Subtle clues of cell damage are missed by current technologies, and the implications for muscle and neurological health are huge. New imaging technology from Professor André Berndt will change that. With support of a Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award from NIH, his team is building multiplexed, protein-based sensors to image and profile the redox imbalances that signal cell damage.

Congratulations to UW BioE's Professor Patrick Stayton and clinical colleagues Professors Eoin West and Shawn Skerrett in the @uwsomwwami. With the backing from Wellcome Leap’s $50 million Focused Antibiotics program, they are developing a new means of treating pneumonia. The inhaled drug would improve therapy and prevent common side effects and protect the gut microbiome.

Congratulations to Professor Hichem Tasfaout, who is part of a new @nihgov R01 grant exploring gene therapies for RYR-1 related diseases. These inherited muscle diseases cause weakness and breathing difficulties, and many patients require ventilation from birth.

The NIH funding follows seed funding from @theryr1foundation and the John H. Tietze Foundation Trust, which is administered by @uwiscrm, supporting promising early-career scientists.

Well done, Professor Tasfaout, on this very promising work! Find out more: https://iscrm.uw.edu/seed-funding-leads-to-major-grant-to-test-promising-gene-replacement-strategy/ A man in a grey quarter-zip sweater leans against a lab bench and smiles for the camera. by @uwbioengineering
