A huge congratulations to BME students Noah Kalthoff and Ruffin Bryant, along with Computer Science and Data Science student Aadya Ganjigunta, on earning 3rd place and the Best Methodology Report award at the #MICCAI 2026 EndoVis SurgVU Challenge!🎉

Working with Assistant Professor Dhananjay Bhaskar and UW Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Assistant Professor Tuo Peter Li, the OpScribe-AI team developed an AI system that answers questions about surgical videos. The international challenge attracted 78 participants from 12 countries.

Noah and Ruffin began working with Prof. Bhaskar and Prof. Li through a BME Design project last year. That collaboration led to the founding of OpScribe-AI (https://opscribe-ai.com/), a company developing AI solutions for surgical video analysis.

We’re proud to see our students turn their BME design experience into a growing venture and earn international recognition for their work!

A big BME Badger welcome to our newest faculty member, Assistant Professor Jonathan Soucy, founder of the Neural Engineering for Restoring Vision (NERV) Lab. 🔬

Soucy's research combines stem cell engineering, tissue engineering, and neuroengineering to explore how retinal cells reconnect with the brain. We're excited to see the impact of his work unfold! Read more about it in the news link in our bio. Jonathan Soucy by @uwmadison_bme

We may be a little biased, so we asked our new Chair, Professor Shawn Gomez, what makes UW-Madison a unique place to do great science.

Here’s what Gomez is most excited about for our growing department: https://go.wisc.edu/newBMEchair by @uwmadison_bme

A warm Badger welcome to Dr. Shawn Gomez, our new Peter Tong Chair of Biomedical Engineering. 👋

Gomez's work in computational systems biology, translational AI, and medtech incubation bridges the gap between academic excellence and real-world medical impact.

Welcome to Wisconsin, Dr. Gomez! Drop your welcome messages for him in the comments below 👇 Shawn Gomez by @uwmadison_bme
