@riley.barber7, a current doctoral student in @uwanimaldairysciences, has been selected as one of this year's @ffarfellows! The FFAR Fellows Program provides professional development and career guidance to the next generation of food and agriculture scientists. Congratulations, Riley!

Riley's graduate research focuses on improving the sustainability of dairy production through nutritional strategies that reduce environmental impacts while maintaining productivity. As a FFAR Fellow, she'll continue this work while building relationships and learning new skills alongside her cohort.

Congratulations to CALS alumni Derek Ho BS'18, MS'21, PhD'24 for receiving a 2026 Forward Award from @wisalumni! Derek completed his bachelor's, master’s, and PhD in biological systems engineering, where he developed innovative methods that combine fluorescence imaging and machine learning to detect and identify microplastics. He is the founder of Plastic-Free Pals, a platform bringing together citizen science, education, and community action, and is known on social media platforms as "Dr. Microplastics." Derek is a dedicated science communicator who educates and empowers the public to take meaningful action against plastic pollution.

This summer, a group of students spent two weeks in South Africa at the Makalali Game Reserve during the UW Wildlife Conservation in South Africa study abroad program. 🌍 Students participated in daily wildlife monitoring drives and bush walks, engaged in habitat restoration, and learned about ecology and behavior of African wildlife as well as wildlife conservation issues, such as nature reserve management, impacts of wildlife-based tourism, community involvement in conservation, and wildlife crime.

Every October, the UW–Madison Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences takes fall traditions to a whole new level with the Giant Pumpkin Regatta! ⁠

Giant Atlantic pumpkins grown in Plant Sciences get carved, mounted on inner tubes, and launched right off the shores of Lake Mendota. ⁠

Badgers hop inside, grab a paddle, and stay afloat (maybe). 💦🎃⁠

Congratulations to @uwanimaldairysciences first-year student Braeden Bechel on earning first place in the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest Individual Honors during this year’s World Dairy Expo! 🥇 He claimed first with 715 points, 15 more points than second place. Congratulations CALS alum Patricia Paskov BS'15 for receiving a 2026 Forward Award from @wisalumni! Patricia is an emerging leader in AI evaluation and governance whose research, institution-building, and policy engagement is shaping how advanced AI systems are assessed and regulated globally.

As Director of Standards at the AI Verification an Evaluation Research Institute (AVERI), adjunct researcher at the RAND Center on AI, Security, & Technology, research affiliate at the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative, instructor for the International Programme on AI Evaluation, resilience section lead for the 2026 International AI Safety Report, and cofounder of NYC AI Governance and Safety, she has advanced rigorous methods for evaluating AI capabilities, risks, and reliability.
