🇵🇷Join us on October 22 for a talk with Grammy Award musician (and UWM MA student) Beto Torrens! He will speak about his decades of cultural artistry working in Puerto Rico's oldest living musical tradition, bomba. This music and dance was created on the island by our enslaved African ancestors to create communities of support between the various ethnic groups that were forced to live together.

🎵Come learn about this continually evolving art form and feel the rhythms for yourself! Full event details at link in bio.

* Thursday, October 22
* 2:30pm - 3:30pm
* UWM Libraries – American Geographical Society Library (3rd floor east wing)

Beto Torrens is a Grammy Award musician, producer, and educator from San Juan, Puerto Rico. With a career that spans over 30 years professionally, Beto’s main interest is in creating bridges between Afro-diasporic music and dance traditions from the Caribbean and the Americas. He is currently pursuing an MA in music here at UW-Milwaukee. by @uwmclacs

C21’s Careers for Humanists panel discussion (coming up on Oct 21) will feature five emerging- and mid-career professionals working in humanities-adjacent fields. Swipe to learn about 2 of them.

Jamee graduated from UWM last August with a Ph.D. in African and African Diaspora Studies. She secured a role as the Special Assistant to the Executive Director at the Bronzeville Center for the Arts—where she now supports executive leadership, institutional initiatives, and public programming—before the ink was dry on her diploma. How’d she land a job so fast? What’s the current job market like?

Monica earned her Ph.D. in Iberian and Latin American Cultures from Stanford University before teaching Spanish and Portuguese language and Latin American literature at Reed College, Mt. Tamalpais College, and Stanford. Now she’s the Associate Director at UWM’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. How’d she make the leap from teaching to admin and what informed that decision?

You’ll get the chance to ask the above questions, and more, at 175 Curtin Hall on Wed, October 21. The panel and Q&A run from 6 to 7:30p with a meet and greet reception to follow.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Browse our IG grid for info about the other panelists. Check the link in our bio or visit tinyurl.com/c21humancareer to learn more and register.

Designed with current students in mind, this candid conversation will offer concrete advice for navigating the job market and making major (or minor) life decisions in uncertain times.

Stick around after the panel and audience Q&A for a meet and greet with panelists, a reception with refreshments, and a chance to chat with career advisors from UWM’s Student Experience and Talent.

Earlier this month, we joined UWM Children’s Learning Center’s 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘛𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 for a workshop on Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral.

After learning about her iconic painting 𝘈𝘣𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶, kindergarten and school-age children created their own colorful interpretations inspired by her work. We loved seeing their creativity come to life and are grateful for opportunities to collaborate across campus with our youngest learners! by @uwmclacs

Join us at noon on Friday for the final WLC Speaker Series event of the semester with Dr. Leah Leone Anderson! #UWM #Borges #VirginiaWoolf Leah Leone Anderson
A Translation of His Own? Borges and Virginia Woolf
On commission, Jorge Luis Borges translated A Room of One’s Own into Spanish in 1936 and Orlando in 1937. Both translations had tremendous impacts among Spanish language readers who came to celebrate the feminist rhetoric of the former and the narrative innovations of the latter. Comparative analyses of original and translation reveal that important aspects of these acclaimed features were in fact attenuated by an author/translator whose own narrative style was diametrically opposed to that of Virginia Woolf.
Dr. Leah Leone Anderson is a translator from Spanish and Portuguese and a scholar of Borges, translation, feminism and care ethics. Her book Borges’s Creative Infidelities: Translating Joyce, Woolf and Faulkner was published by Bloomsbury in 2024 and was recently released in paperback. She is a graduate of UWM’s MA in Language, Literature and Translation program. Friday, April 24, 12-1pm, CRT 118. by @uwmclacs

POV: you step into the Latin American Film Series 🎬

From walking into the theater, to catching glimpses of all the academic programs, trips, and opportunities waiting just outside, this is what the 47th Annual Latin American Film Series felt like. Every night was filled with stories, conversations, and moments that stayed with us long after the credits rolled. The energy, the community, and the love for film made it something truly special.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, and shared this experience with us. And if you missed it this year, we hope to see you next time 👀✨

See you next year at the 48th Annual Latin American Film Series! by @uwmclacs
