Donna Messina joined the UW as a full-time faculty member in 2000, but her history with the Physics Department goes back to the mid-1990s, when she participated in the Physics Education Groups’ Summer Institute for Inservice Teachers.  At the time she was the Science Department Head at Seattle Preparatory School, where she also taught biology and chemistry.  Donna stood out in the Summer Institute so much that she was invited to return as a peer instructor for several years, before finally leaving her position at Seattle Prep and accepting a faculty position at UW.  While here Donna obtained her PhD from the UW College of Education. Donna took on leadership of the Summer Institutes, and helped update our academic-year courses for preservice teachers. She also taught in courses for underprepared students, most recently developing a course to help students whose high school preparation was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.  Donna was an extremely popular instructor and mentor for dozens of high school teachers in the region and across the country. Her presence helped make the UW Physics Department an internationally recognized leader in physics teacher education. by @uwphysics

On the occasion of Gerald Miller’s retirement, we celebrate an extraordinary career and his lasting impact on nuclear physics and the University of Washington. Jerry has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of nuclear structure, hadron physics, and the quark and gluon structure of matter, while helping build UW into one of the world’s leading centers for nuclear theory. He was also one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Institute for Nuclear Theory, and contributed to its international reach and scientific vitality. Generations of students, postdocs, colleagues, and visitors have benefited from Jerry’s insight, enthusiasm, and dedication to physics. We congratulate him on a remarkable career and thank him for everything he has done for the UW, the INT, and the nuclear physics community. by @uwphysics

A big congratulations to Associate Professor Matt Yankowitz for being selected as a Moore Foundation experimental physics investigator!

"The Experimental Physics Investigators Initiative was established by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support creative individuals who have recently received tenure (or its equivalent) and to cultivate collaborative research environments. Investigators are encouraged to tackle interesting new research problems, pivot when necessary, and bring on students and postdoctoral researchers to accelerate their progress." (UW CAS)
