Up next for our intern spotlight is Dr. Sai Pinni!

Sai grew up in St. Louis, MO and went to college at Johns Hopkins University, where she majored in Neuroscience and minored in Spanish. While at Hopkins, she competed with her a cappella team and worked in Dr. Sami Tuffaha’s lab before spending a gap year working for Bloomberg Philanthropies. She then returned home for medical school at WashU, including a research year with Drs. Susan Mackinnon and Justin Sacks. Inspired by Drs. Mackinnon and Tuffaha, Sai is especially passionate about peripheral nerve surgery, as well as pediatric plastic surgery, and is excited to continue exploring these interests at UW.

Sai fell in love with UW on interview day. UW PRS faculty and residents were some of the most clinically attuned and technically skilled surgeons she had met, while also being incredibly supportive and fun! She could see herself thriving in this environment that would challenge her professionally while learning from people who embody the kind of colleague and mentor she aspires to become. UW felt like a perfect fit!

Outside of the hospital, you can find Sai at Orangetheory, watching F1 with friends (while coming in dead last in her fantasy league), taking advantage of PNW hobbies like paddleboarding and hiking, or trying to convince everyone and anyone she knows to go to a concert with her. She is also excited to bring her annual birthday karaoke tradition to @uwplasticsurgery ! We are so lucky to have Dr. Pinni as part of our team! by @uwplasticsurgery

🌵UW Plastic Surgery - Texas Edition 🤠

We had a great time seeing old and new friends at PSTM! The group had a great week with lectures and panels by Drs. Susarla and Crowe. Oral presentations highlighting Dr. Badiee, Dr. Bennett, and our research fellow Nevin Kalaf’s incredible work! And our very own medical student Silvia Chen was awarded top poster 🥇!

We can’t wait to catch up with everyone in Baltimore next year! 🦀 by @uwplasticsurgery

📣Alumni spotlight📣

Since completing her residency training at the University of Washington in 2017, Dr. Laura K. Tom has built a career focused on reconstructive microsurgery 🔬and lymphatic surgery 🪡.

Following residency, she pursued fellowship training in lymphatic surgery at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona, Spain, with additional training across Europe and Asia 🌍 She subsequently joined the faculty at Georgetown University School of Medicine where she helped establish and grow a lymphatic surgery program.
A Pacific Northwest native, Dr. Tom returned to the region as Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University 🏔️. At OHSU, she is expanding access to advanced breast reconstruction and lymphatic surgery. Her work reflects the technical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care that define the UW Plastic Surgery community. by @uwplasticsurgery

Congratulations to Yusha Katie Liu, MD, PhD and her research team 🎉!

Dr. Liu was recently awarded an NIH R03 grant 🏥 to investigate surface EMG-driven therapeutic gaming as a novel tool to accelerate recovery in patients undergoing nerve reconstruction surgery for brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries. Surface EMG is a wearable technology that detects electrical signals from muscle activation, even before movement is visible. When paired with interactive gaming 👩🏽‍💻, this method offers patients real-time biofeedback to stay engaged throughout the often lengthy road to recovery💪🏻.

📋A new publication from her team reviews emerging clinical applications for surface EMG-based therapies. This work represents an important step toward more effective, patient-centered rehabilitation strategies! ⭐️ by @uwplasticsurgery

We can’t wait to meet you all in the 🌲🌊virtual PNW 🌲🏔️ by @uwplasticsurgery

It’s time to introduce you to one of your new favorite @uwplasticsurgery faces — Payton Grande!!

Payton grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and began college at Emory University before transferring to Boston College, where she graduated with degrees in Biology and Women’s & Gender Studies. She then headed back home for medical school at the University of Tennessee and spent a research year at Stanford with the @care.prs program. She is especially interested in general pediatric Plastic Surgery and pediatric craniofacial surgery, and is excited to explore these interests during her time at UW.

When it came time to choose a residency program, UW stood out for the people. During her interview, Payton had so much fun and felt genuinely seen by the residents and faculty. She was looking for a place that would push her to become an excellent surgeon while also helping her grow as a whole person, and found that at UW. The incredible diversity of patients and cases and strong emphasis on teaching only made the decision easier.

Outside the hospital, Payton is usually reading a mystery thriller, watching reality TV, doing yoga, painting, or finding any excuse to be in the water. She’s also a die-hard basketball fan (go Grizzlies, go Vols!) and a two-time fantasy basketball champion, so consider this your warning before draft season. 🏀🏆

We’re so excited to have Payton here for the next six years and can’t wait to see all that she does! by @uwplasticsurgery

🔬RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT🔬

Improving the evidence-base in plastic surgical interventions is paramount to advancing our field. Some of our current and incoming faculty members, Dr. Shane Morrison, Dr. Russell Ettinger, and Dr. Danielle Eble, have been focused on improving the evidence-base for gender-affirming surgery. Their research focuses on patient-reported outcomes and the development standardized core outcomes sets for gender affirmation and is featured in multiple high impact surgical journals. 👏 Thank you all for your contributions to the field!
