“Growing the game” means having the patience and humility to shepherd newcomers into the sport with intention, grace and care. This is one of our specialities @onyxtennisThere is more interest in our game now than ever before! And it matters that newcomers have inclusive spaces where they feel safe to explore, fail, learn, and grow in public. Tennis is a multigenerational experience. Today’s adult beginner is tomorrow’s champion tennis parent.I challenge other tennis pros—especially those chasing pro tour and high-performance pathways—and lifelong players to take a step back. Could you explain tennis fundamentals to a toddler or a 40 year old novice without getting frustrated or scoffing at them? Most coaches suck at teaching beginners. They don’t bother equipping them with fundamental tennis knowledge—like how scoring works or what all the lines and boxes on a tennis court mean. I teach this to our students on Day 1.I believe that knowledge is power. And in a sport like tennis that systemically reinforces gatekeeping and elitism, it is important to democratize information for new players and build their confidence early. That can be the difference between never touching a racquet again and becoming the tennis parent of a future champion.Learning is a pillar of @onyxtennis.
