My wonderful chapter as a guinea pig mama is closed. Yesterday, I said a tearful goodbye to my darling Mycroft. We started together and we finished together, just the two of us. He was the first one I spotted 6 and 1/2 years ago because he was just so handsome (and he knew it!). Mycroft was with me through lockdown, breakups, losing my dad, moving, getting engaged, and together he and I got through losing 3 other piggies. He was opinionated and beautiful the whole time. He learned several tricks, tried countless fruit, veggies, and cookies, met other piggie friends, drove up and down to LA with me multiple times, and brought me joy on days when I didn’t think I could make it to baseline. If you have ever spent time with me, you know what Mycroft and all my furry friends meant to me. He did his very best to do his job to get me through grad school and I am so grateful for every snuggle, wheek, and twirl. If you want to honor him, eat mangos and cilantro and cookies and voice your strong opinions to whomever might be close enough to give you what you want. He certainly did.

This weekend I got to celebrate my dad’s life. The outpouring of love from the community he has built over his life was awe-inspiring. @lyzzschwegler wrote a beautiful obituary for him already (thanks Lyzz!) and here are the thoughts I keep having about him.

My dad was an enthusiastic sailor, enthusiastic scientist, bicycle rider, wine appreciator… He was just enthusiastic about life. He often told me he was “relentlessly optimistic”. I think I inherited it from him, which is good because I would rather that than the beard.

He just loved life and it was infectious. It made being his kid really fun. He read the entire Hobbit and Lord of The Rings out loud to us. One year he blew up an Easter egg after he decorated it like a pirate ship. We made tornadoes, battery potatoes, volcanos, and things im sure I can’t remember right now.

I miss him constantly. I miss his stories, I miss hearing about his bike rides, I miss telling him about the random interesting stuff I’m learning in school, I miss him speaking fluent French to me like I understood more than every few words. It was a privilege to be his daughter and I am forever grateful that I knew how lucky I was when he was here.

I love hearing stories about him, so if you knew him, send them my way. And if you really knew him, drink a glass of the best wine you can find and then send the stories my way. It’s just what he would have wanted 🩵

Love you forever and ever dad, you really were one of a kind.

My darling piggie, Irene passed away this past weekend. We got to spend over 3 years with her; running, pop corning, and wheeking for snacks. When I first rescued her, her sole surviving baby had been rescued without her, but she persisted. She was younger and Mycroft felt protective of her immediately so that was that. It took me a month to figure out she had eaten 1/3 of a coroplast ramp, I’ll never know why she did that. She lived life on the edge, always exploring, always curious, so quick with affection to everyone. I loved her so much and I will do my best to carry with me this way of life. Life can be short, so today, eat the apples, the cilantro, and the cookies. And give your pets an extra kiss 🐾

So it’s happening, I’m starting my doctorate program in the fall at @smu_dpt !!!

It started out as a wild idea in summer of 2020 to go get a doctorate in Physical Therapy and just you know, dip my toe in by taking Statistics. 4 years later and I finally finished all of the pre-reqs (yes, I had to retake everything because they expire and I had a whole other career since undergrad).

Giant thank you to all the cookies I ate and animals I cuddled over the last 4 years (and the ones for the next 2.5 years!) y’all are the real ones. Thank you to my friends and family for cheering me on, @acedanceacademy for supporting me even though it’s bittersweet; my students for commiserating through mid terms/finals with me, all of @dana_lawton_dances for reminding me that dance is good for my mental health and tequila might be too. And finally to @theseafus for quite literally holding my shoulders, looking me dead in the eyes, and telling me you would not let me give up because I’ve come to far. I love you 💜
