A very meaningful chapter in my development has come to a close after 40 years. On its final day open to the public, I took my 7 year old to the place where I purchased my very first book for myself. It’s a place that in many ways, represented far more than a bookstore. It was a space where knowledge, culture, identity, and community lived.

When I was in the eighth grade, I boarded the #10 bus after basketball practice at Eastmoor Middle School and traveled down Broad Street. I walked into the store with the intention of purchasing my first personal Quran. Dr. Miller explained that he would need to order it and that it would arrive in approximately two weeks. When I returned to pick it up, he handed me the Quran and simply said, “This one is on me.” I was young then, but I understood that the gesture represented something much larger than the cost of a book. It was an act of generosity, mentorship, and investment in a young person’s intellectual and spiritual development. Moments like that have a way of remaining with us long after we leave the place where they occurred.

Thank you, Dr. Miller, for everything you have been to our community and for creating a space where generations could discover knowledge, culture, and most importantly themselves.

Black Arts Plus may have closed its doors, but its legacy remains open in the lives it touched. Its imprint is etched deeply into my heart, and I am grateful that I was able to bring my son there before the doors closed for the final time. ♥️ taken in Black Art Plus by @vadaazeem

Lu played in his first ever games under the whistle, yesterday. He is playing up with 3rd and 4th graders. He gave Coach some good minutes, and played great defense. 1% better! by @vadaazeem

I told Lu, all I want for my birthday is for him to win double gold (Gi and No Gi) at his tournament this weekend.

After being in the car for 2 hours, going straight to Weigh In, and then right to the mat…he lost his very first match. I realized I had a misstep as his Dad. I put too much pressure on him.

I then told him that I changed my mind, and all I want for my birthday is for him to have fun. He proceeded to win match after match!

He then told me, “I won double gold for you Dad.” I asked him did he have fun? He replied, “yes.” ♥️
