Thanks @sfmoma for having me Sunday 🪂 Did “A Skateboarder’s Lens” presentation talking about skateboarding’s relationship with the built environment, writing, Michael McClure performing poetry to lions, Isamu Noguchi, Michael Alvarez’s paintings, hip hop, and coincidentally, The Sundays. Followed by a reading from CHIPPED upstairs at the entrance of the massive Get in the Game exhibition, open until February. Happy pub day Sacramento Noir! 🕵🏽‍♂️🍸

When I moved to Sacramento, one of the first exhibits I saw at @thecamuseum was the “The Negro Motorist Green Book” exhibit @sitesexhibitions was touring, but the museum did something special with an expanded look of archival photos of previous Black and Japanese owned clubs, predominately in Sacramento’s West End. This included the Mo-Mo Club and the Zanzibar Cafe.

Fast forward a few years. After meeting @freemanreads through @altajournal’s California Book Club, I was offered a shot at writing some short noir specifically from a neighborhood within the city, and those images of the Zanzibar came rushing back. The result is my short story “Downriver, November 1949” which takes place on the last night of the Zanzibar’s existence.

A big thank you to John Freeman and Akashic Books for the opportunity. Hope to see you at a reading soon! I’ll be reading in Davis @avidreaderdavis Monday, March 10 and in Sacramento @capitalbooksonk on Saturday, April 5. by @vadiparty

Friday marked five years in Sacramento.

Our old Oakland apartment building in Rockridge, where we got married in 2020 at the height of the pandemic and lived from 2015-2021, was next to these houses bought by previous tenants from our building. As the moving van was getting loaded, they gave us a grocery bag full of naked lady lily bulbs, saying they’d grow anywhere.

A lot of things have changed in the yard. We lost a gorgeous orange tree that reminded me of mi Abuelo and a big white oleander bush in the New Year’s Eve storm a few years back. But these guys keep finding their way, blooming tall and looking cute.
