MY SHADOW, MY SUNSHINE - #charcoal
(artist statement)
This artwork demonstrates the connection between people and pets, specifically the connection I had with my cat Stew. Our pets become our friends and our family. Stew became my shadow—because she would follow me everywhere I went—and my sunshine–because she would always brighten my day. To show this in my piece, I illustrated our closeness and used value to show her radiating the sunlight. We are both the focal point, but I gave her a brighter and higher contrast to show how important she is to me. This piece is also about the grief of losing a pet, and acceptance. I used charcoal because the black and white makes it look like an old picture, providing feelings of bittersweet nostalgia. Grieving that moments like that are over, but being able to accept it and smile at the good times.

hi guys i haven't posted in awhile rant incoming 😛
Heres my two most recent commissions, Riley and Harlie! I tried to use different colors/backgrounds/poses to show their unique personalities :] 🐕

little rant,
i know i havent posted in awhile.. and i feel so guilty about it! after graduating and no longer being in the same environment that helped give me motivation to keep creating, i struggled to make art. I took some commisions, and while im proud of myself for doing them, i think it just made art feel like a chore to me and made me super critical of myself. 🙁 so i'm going to close them for awhile and just do my own thing without feeling all the pressure. i've also been super busy working full time lol ☕️
but right now, i feel like my creativity is going more towards cosplay, fashion, and fun makeup instead of making art on paper, so idk when ill post again 🤷 but i guess thats okay! if you read to the end, comment a 💜 :] by @vaehz.art

Title: Loving Through Change

This piece is about the grief and acceptance of a sudden and unknown medical issue that changed my little cousin's life and mind, possibly forever. This pastel drawing references a photo of me and him after he regained some of his memory years later. I choose this photo because it represents how our bond remains unbroken through this change and through the grief, while also showing that I have come to accept this change. I choose the oil pastels because the medium is very similar to crayon, which to me represents childhood, memories, innocence, and nostalgia.

From 2021-2022, my little cousin Asa experienced a major mental regression that doctors could not explain, diagnose, and were unsure on how to treat. He was about 9-10 years old at the time. He stopped talking, stopped writing, stopped reading, became more irritable, and seemed to have had some memory loss, as he would no longer react to seeing the people he used to be so excited to see, like me, my brother, and my mom. It was like a major part of his personality was gone, like he was an entirely different kid one day. This crushed my family, as we had been very close with Asa, he was honestly like a little brother to me. We wanted to talk to him again, to see him write and draw and read to us again. We missed seeing the way his face would light up when he saw us. We wanted to see him grow.

3-4 years later, Asa has somewhat recovered in some areas, but we are still unsure on what happened, why it happened, and if things will ever be the same. However, we have seen glimpses of his personality peek through more and more often. His silliness, his sweetness, his curiosity, and his memory. He has started to say some words and phrases every now and then that give us a better understanding of his feelings and thoughts. His face lights up when he sees us, and though he won't say anything, you can tell he remembers us now by the way he smiles, laughs, and hugs us... (Continued In Comments) 1/2 by @vaehz.art

CONTENT WARNING: DRUG ABUSE, ADDICTION.

This piece is about my grandmother– or as we call her, mom-mom– and my experience with the anger and grief of her losing her true self due to her drug abuse.

She started abusing her prescriptions about 20 years ago, so when I was born, she had already been in her addiction for about 2 years. Since she wasn't really herself, (usually overdosing on her medication) my mom never brought me around her because she didn't want me to see her like that, and my mom-mom never came around either due to the health issues the drugs caused and being deep in addiction. When I was little, I didn't really understand and thought it was normal to not have a relationship with your grandparents. As I got old enough to understand the truth, I started to grieve the relationship I never had and the woman that I never met. I've learned that my mom-mom was a beautiful, always polished, and resilient woman who struggled with mental health. When she looked for help, instead of doctors taking the time to truly help and understand her condition, they seemed to have labeled her with whatever mental illnesses they could have and gave her drugs instead. I wasn't just mad at my grandmother for choosing drugs over her family, but I was enraged that those who we were supposed to help her, hurt her instead with their ignorance and carelessness.

As I went through this feeling of grief I started feeling more confusion and anger, and I asked my mom why no one was helping her. She explained to me she has tried countless times. She talked to her doctors, they treated my mom like she was crazy and a liar. She talked to the pharmacies, they looked the other way and continued giving my grandma the drugs she abused. Recently, after my aunt passed away, my mom was afraid of losing mom-mom too, and even went to the judge to try to find help and get these drugs to stop being prescribed to her. The judge told my mom there was nothing they could do, unless she overdosed or admitted herself to a rehab center... 1/2 (Continued in comments) by @vaehz.art

Title: A Normal Family Photo
Medium: Watercolor, White pen

Despite what the title suggests, this is not a normal family photo. This piece is about the passing of my Aunt Chelle, and how I've felt lots of denial during my grieving process. She passed away on August 1st, 2024, at 50 years old.

Her death was unexpected, sudden, and preventable. We had no clue what the cause was, when, or where she was, and I remember the first thing I felt was this strong sense of denial. As we went to the different hospitals near us asking if they had her or knew where she was, I was hoping it was just a mistake and that we would find her — until the last hospital we went to told us she had passed away in the ambulance several days ago. This denial lingered strongest through the holidays, which led to the making of this piece. Every thanksgiving, christmas, and new years, she would help set things up, make food, and support my mom. So, when she didn't show up, it just felt even more unreal, like she was there but wasn't. I remember taking a photo with my aunt Bonnie and my mom and just feeling her presence like she was there in the photo with us. Though I knew she wasn't there, it was comforting to pretend she really was. That moment inspired this exact piece. To represent the feeling of her presence and being in denial that she was really gone, I made her colors look more washed out, a bit messy. Some parts of her even blend with the background. Hand drawn sunflowers on top of red and white brush strokes of paint surround her represent the feeling of her presence reaching towards us. I chose red to represent her because of her distinct, dyed red hair that had been red for as long as I could remember; And sunflowers, because everyone knew those were her favorite...
