Who remembers the films we screened in 2004?

Continuing our 30-week countdown to #VAFF30 -- For the first time since VAFF’s inception, panel discussions were introduced in 2004 alongside program screenings. The two panels respectively discussed the representation of the male image and stereotyping of the female image in film. The panel discussions aimed to educate the public at large as well as open up a wider opportunity for discourse among Asian filmmakers and the Asian community.

🎭 Are you ready for a role that could cost her identity?

🎉Introducing Team YOUTOPIA
#MAMM21 Ten Minute Shorts Finalist

🎬Film: YOUTOPIA
🦸‍♀️Team Leader: @its_jun____

Logline: A struggling immigrant actress accepts a high-stakes role with no script—only the ""settings"" of a socialite’s deceased daughter. As she reconstructs the dead girl from her own flesh and blood, she discovers that a paradise built on someone else’s parameters is a utopia where her own soul is the first thing to be deleted.

SangJun Lee (Jun Lee) is a Vancouver-based 1st Assistant Editor, and Vancouver Film School alumnus. Leveraging his extensive technical expertise, Jun steps into the director's chair for MAMM21. His psychological thriller, YOUTOPIA, dissects the unsettling mechanics of identity erasure and immigrant survival, bringing a cold, clinical suspense and raw emotional tension to the screen.

🦷 Hold on to your teeth. Are you ready for this one?

🎉Introducing Team MAMMolars
#MAMM21 One Minute Ultra Shorts Finalist

🎬Film: The Teething Hour
🦸‍♀️Team Leader: @xehlena

Logline: As the tooth fairy (now a mouse) comes to collect a child’s lost tooth, it is unexpectedly captured by a mysterious aswang, the true figure behind whose really taking our teeth.

Xelena is a Filipino storyteller with a background in student theatre and film productions. Although she typically works in the art department, she has grown to love writing, directing, and producing--especially for genre-bending body horror. If you ask 'why teeth?' for this project, she'll attribute it to having lost too many teeth (all baby, four wisdom, four adult) over her lifetime.
