With bear activity surging, we want to remind residents and visitors that the best way to protect them is to “Latch the Can” and give bears plenty of space. That means ensuring that public and residential bear resistant canisters have been properly latched and secured as well as avoiding bears for their safety – and yours.

The Town of Vail's Wildlife Protection Ordinance mandates wildlife resistant trash enclosures for residences and businesses and these containers are compliant only if they are closed and latched properly. Vail Town Code also requires only putting residential trash outside from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on a scheduled trash collection day. Intentional or unintentional feeding of wildlife at any time through the mishandling of pet food, bird feeders and garbage is prohibited and subject to an immediate citation.

Questions? Call the Vail Police non-emergency line at 970-479-2200. This is a poster titled "Latch the Can," featuring an image of a bear peering out from a dumpster. The poster emphasizes using wildlife-resistant containers to prevent bears from accessing trash. It advises fully latching trash and recycling cans and storing cans indoors when possible. The logos of the Town of Vail and Vail Police Department are included at the bottom. by @vailgov

Vail residents: we're partnering with Vail Valley Waste to offer curbside yard waste collection two days this fall!

Pick up will take place Oct. 9 and Oct. 23 and advance registration is required by contacting Vail Valley Waste at 970-977-9228 or at info@vailvalleywaste.com. Vail residents do not need to be Vail Valley Waste customers to participate. All yard waste collected will be composted and diverted from the landfill.

ACCEPTED:
- Leaves
- Grass
- Garden trimmings
- Small tree and shrub trimmings
- Branches up to 4 feet long
Yard waste must be put into BPI-certified compostable bags or paper yard waste bags to be collected. Any waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

Bags of leaves: $2 per bag
Tree trimmings: $35 per cubic yard.

The Town of Vail will cover the cost for the first 25 people who sign up. The town will also have a limited number of yard waste bags available at the Town of Vail Municipal Building from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting on Oct. 7 while supplies last.

Composting yard waste and food waste is one of many solutions that can help reduce impacts of climate change while helping achieve the town’s strategic plan goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030. The compost created also returns nutrients to the soil that will grow healthy, strong and nutrient rich vegetables, fruits and other plants.

In addition to the yard waste collection days, the town also offers other compost programs including subsidizing residential curbside compost offered by Vail Honeywagon and Vail Valley Waste. The subsidized cost reduces the bill by $8 per month. HOAs and multi-family residences are also eligible for a subsidy of 50% of the monthly fee, up to $50 per month. Local businesses can participate in the compost rebate program, which offers up to $2,000 in rebates to start or expand a compost program.

More information about the town’s compost programs can be found at www.lovevail.org/compost taken in Vail, Colorado by @vailgov

Meet our Vail Art Studio Challenge winner, Andrew Pranger! Chosen from ten local artists as the recipient of a $5,000 grand prize and a fall residency at the Vail Art Studio in Ford Park, Pranger's open studio hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 26, Oct. 3, and Oct. 10. Additionally, an artist reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 7.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Pranger studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton, one of England’s most well-respected institutions, and graduated with honors. His work, which highlights the relationship between medium and idea, shows attention to the details of applying paint that takes into account the rich tradition of oil painting. While maintaining a lightness of touch and self-deprecating humor that preserves the balance between the profound and the approachable, Pranger’s paintings have been featured in many galleries and organizations throughout the United States and England. After years of living in Europe, he currently resides in Edwards.

After winning the Art Studio Challenge, Pranger also learned that his work will be shown at Vail International Gallery, which is co-owned by Patrick Casey and Marc and Maria LeVarn, from Nov. 27 through the end of the year. “Winning the Art Studio Challenge was such a shock, I don’t know if it’s fully sunk in yet,” said Pranger. “It’s the largest prize I have ever won, and having the opportunity to show my work at Vail International Gallery made the prize even more amazing. It really is such an honor.”

During his open Vail Art Studio hours, patrons can look forward to the unveiling of a new painting that will also be displayed at Vail International Gallery. “I recently had a serious back spasm episode that put me in the hospital, so I plan to make a painting about the experience and the anxiety that came from it,” said Pranger. “Additionally, I’ll be working on completing a piece for this year’s Aqua Art Miami. I am really looking forward to speaking with the community and welcoming them into the space while I create!”

Our tour is finishing off this week at 1pm on Sunday September 20th at @vailmountainschool. We started in Eagle County -and will finish here- and are honored to share it with our up-valley brethren. 🥰 Adam’s work was felt all over the county, from Xcel Energy PIE grants in Minturn, to Level III fast chargers at future park & rides. 🚍 The guy was making miracles happen every day for some project or another. 🧙 Let’s see if we can get a couple of the current projects to the finish line while we lean into a healthier community for the next generation.☀️ Please learn the lyrics to the VMS Ranger’s fight song in advance of the show and be prepared to do Abusi Theater proud with your vocals. 🎶 Then join us afterwards for a group ride to the village to share some cheer @avanti_vail for Adam’s Birthday! 🎂 🚲 Shift Bikes will be demo’ing free e-bikes for the first 15-20 to sign ups. 🤩 And don’t forget our panel, “Matt Scherr and Friends” to close down the tour with some final words about Adam and his impact. 💪🔌🔋 taken in Vail Mountain School by @vailgov
