Schikowski presents a series of painted works primarily in air-brushed acrylics moving the public from the surprised countenance of jesters to the bewilderment of waking up in a declensionist narrative or dystopian sci-fi à la the Matrix.

And so the figure of the jester - perhaps Pepi’s self-portrait - beckons us the viewer to join in on the fun of moving between artistic movements in equal measure going backwards and forwards - no past, no future - just infinite jest.

Pepi Schikowski’s practice renegotiates questions of power, masculinity, vulnerability and death through painting. Working through humour, intuition and expressive colour, Schikowski’s works move between softness and tension, where familiar visual languages are destabilised, creating spaces in which vulnerability, violence and transformation can coexist.

This is Shikowski’s final presentation in Berlin before relocating to Zurich to pursue an MFA at the ZHdK.

PEPI SCHIKOWSKI

Pepi Schikowski’s (he/they) practice employs painting as a means to renegotiate questions of power and hierarchies, using humor, intuition and expressive colour to challenge ﬁxed ideas of masculinity, vulnerability, death and eros. Drawing on mythological references, the works create poetic images in which personal experience and broader narratives intertwine, guided as much by impulse as by reflection.

In a concept attempting to be as open as possible, we invited artists to show their work and present their practice without having set a curatorial framework, or requirements in terms of content, material or media. A snapshot of the present, mapping parallel paths and opposite outlooks, searching for uniting factors where none were prescribed.
