What can we learn about resilience from a garden?

More Impressions of this very meaningful endeavour — creating a garden and working collectively with very different people on questions of resilience, the ecological conditions of diversity, decolonial garden histories and a lot of crafting and arts. Movement - wood - stone - botany - glass - paper - natural inks … so thankful for the team and all the daring participants, forming a temporary community with all its challenges, hopes and boundary work.

The year of whores burning in resistance, of nurturing resilience against ongoing backlashes on human rights, and a year where politicians seem to believe it’s affordable to have a trillionaire but not a social state. Hanging in there. Hugging concrete.

#openpavillon – Gartenbau 2026
We build things and social bonds!
What can we learn about resilience from a garden?

We just finished our second project phase – intense and deep learning around crafts, arts, cultural history, but mainly: rehearsing community building across many layers of differences and co-creation. It was a meaningful and intense ride, together with international volunteers, students with special needs and longterm unemployed ladies from the city. Each of them bringing their thoughts, needs and visions. We dove into the science of biodiversity and why it factually is beneficial; we engaged with the Honorable Harvest and other inderiounous worldview principles that may be our only chance to survive; we made inks from plants around the building, sketched and shares plant stories from inside our lives.
Since 2017, we develop the #openpavillon as community learning platform between arts, crafts and science. I’m the artistic director, a team member and give workshops.. and have loads of admin to do, so over and out :)

„Der Staat greift zu - erst die Nutten, dann die Schwulen, dann DU!"

Dieses Transparent hing 1988 auf einer Demo der Solidarität der Uneinsichtigen in Frankfurt am Main. Valentin Rion hat es im Archiv des Schwulen Museums gefunden – und stellt fest: es fühlt sich erschreckend aktuell an. Im dies monatigen Interview lässt Valentin die Entwicklungen der vergangenen zwei Jahre Revue passieren und spricht darüber, wie Kriminalisierung als Schutz getarnt wird, warum gesellschaftliche Verfolgung in Deutschland zyklisch verläuft – und was das für alle bedeutet, die gerade noch glauben, es geht sie nichts an. Valentin Rion found it in the archives of the Schwules Museum - and notes that it feels alarmingly relevant today. In this month's interview, Valentin looks back on the developments of the past two years and discusses how criminalization is disguised as protection, why social persecution in Germany follows a cyclical pattern - and what that means for everyone who still believes it has nothing to do with them. Valentin Rion (@valentinrion_)ist Performer_in, Kurator_in, Forscher_in und Aktivist_in – und das alles gleichzeitig! Als Valentin 2018 mit dem Sexarbeitenden-Kollektiv „Objects of Desire" ans Schwule Museum herantrat, war die Erwartung bescheiden: „Die werden uns doch niemals nehmen!" Was folgte, war der Beginn einer engen Zusammenarbeit, die 2023 in der vielbeachteten Ausstellung „With Legs Wide Open" gipfelte. Heute sitzt Valentin im Vorstand des Hauses. Im Interview spricht Rion über queere Geschichte und Sexarbeitsaktivismus, über das Prinzip „Nothing about us without us" – und darüber, was das SMU von anderen Institutionen unterscheidet: den ehrlichen Versuch, fürsorglich, intersektional und auf Augenhöhe zu arbeiten. Valentin Rion is a performer, curator, researcher, and activist - all at the same time! When Valentin approached the Schwules Museum in 2018 with the sex worker collective “Objects of Desire,” expectations were modest: “They’ll never take us on!” What followed was the beginning of a close collaboration that culminated in 2023 with the highly acclaimed exhibition “With Legs Wide Open.” Today, Valentin sits on the museum’s board. In this interview, Rion talks about queer history and sex work activism, about the principle “Nothing about us without us” - and about what sets the SMU apart from other institutions: the sincere effort to work in a caring, intersectional, and collaborative manner. The visionary disputable f4ggot film legend Rosa von Praunheim has gone on his last journey. Sending you light. For two years I worked on a film project with him, „Männerfreundschaften“ with ARTE. It was a ride and a meaningful experience on my artistic path. Thank you Rosa (and Valentina! And Markus and OMA…) —- and one of my main characters in the movie, the queer Duke Emil August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, has accompanied me repeatedly ever since! Tage der Offenen Werft 195+5 Jahre . Aken 2025 —

Der jährliche Tag der Offenen Werft lädt die Region ein, hautnah auf der alten Werft als neuen Lebensort für Kultur und Handwerk dabei zu sein – und dieses Jahr waren es sogar drei Tage Programm!
Zwischen Ausstellung zu 200 Jahren Werft-Bestehen (195+5 Jahre), Konzerten, Clown-Acts, Kinderprogramm, Schminken, Frühschoppen, Kulinarik und Quizze, Film-Programm, Open Mic und vielem anderen war das Wochenende prall gefüllt mit Engagement, Sommerfrische und neugierigem Austausch vor Ort!
