Stripe and Openrouter started adding 13% HST to AI token bills for Canadian companies this week. A lot of founders are calling it a 13% price hike.

It mostly isn’t one. If your business is registered for HST, that tax should come back as an input tax credit against the HST you collect. For most real businesses it nets out.

There’s a catch. A lot of US digital providers registered with CRA under the simplified regime that came in for digital services in 2021. Generally you can’t claim ITCs on HST charged by a simplified registrant. If you give them your GST/HST business number, they’re supposed to stop charging it. So go put your BN in your Stripe, OpenAI and Anthropic billing settings. If you don’t, you could be eating the 13% for real.

Who does feel it: small operators and solo agents who aren’t registered, consumers, and anyone exempt like a lot of financial and residential rental businesses. For them it’s a straight 13% increase on compute.

What I’m watching is the interpretation. Is a token a digital service, a software licence, or something else? Where is it “supplied” when the model runs on a server in Virginia and the output gets used in Ontario? And what happens when AI agents start buying compute from each other with no human in the loop? The tax code was written for SaaS seats, not metered intelligence.

Compute is turning into a utility. Utilities get taxed. Expect more of this, not less.

GTA condo rents are relatively steady, but leasing conditions still depend on the unit and the competition nearby. In September 2026, MLS-listed condo apartments across the GTA leased for an average of $2,654 per month, 0.4% below September 2025. The report recorded 5,355 completed leases, and successful listings averaged 19 days on market.

For landlords, the practical question is how your unit compares with what tenants can choose today. For renters, neighbourhood and unit type can tell you more than the regional average alone.

These figures cover MLS-listed condo apartments in Toronto, Peel, York, Halton and Durham—not every rental home in the GTA.
