VALIE EXPORT’s ‘Die Doppelgängerin’ (2010) at the 7th Skulpturen-Triennale Bingen in Germany and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland.

The sculpture’s title draws on the German word for ‘look-alike’ (der Doppelgänger) and the related notion of one’s spiritual companion, the ‘other self’ or ‘shadow’. The work features that figure in female form, adding the suffix ‘-in’ to create a new word and a new understanding.

The over four-metre-high ‘Die Doppelgängerin’ consists of two gigantic scissors, intertwined to form a figure that is as graceful as it is menacing, and which triggers the most diverse associations. Traditionally, scissors have been associated with so-called ‘feminine’ spheres – sewing, tailoring, housework, fashion – but also with violence and fear: they recall the surgical instrument as well as suggesting male castration and of imagined ‘female’ violence. The symbolic scissors also reference film editing, montage and de-contextualisation, a nod to the subtle interweaving of associations often found in the artist’s work.

🍂 Endspurt am Kulturufer – ein Werk, das gerade um die Welt geht

Nur noch bis zum 4. Oktober ist am Binger Rheinufer "Die Doppelgängerin" von VALIE EXPORT @valieexportfoundation zu sehen – die über vier Meter hohe Skulptur aus zwei ineinander verschlungenen, überdimensionalen Scheren. Zart und bedrohlich zugleich, spielt die "Doppelschere" mit Assoziationen zwischen Handarbeit und Schnitt, Nähe und Verletzung, Montage und Trennung.

Und gerade jetzt, in den letzten Tagen der Triennale, bekommt die Arbeit noch einmal besonderes Gewicht:
Erst vor wenigen Tagen, am 19. September 2026, wurde eine weitere Fassung der "Doppelgängerin" auf dem Zentralplatz vor dem Museum of Modern Art in Warschau @msm.warsaw enthüllt und in den öffentlichen Raum der Stadt geholt.
Das Werk erobert sich damit – posthum – weitere internationale Bühnen, nur wenige Monate nach dem Tod der Künstlerin im Mai 2026.

Wer die Skulptur am Binger Kulturufer noch nicht gesehen hat, hat jetzt die letzte Gelegenheit dazu – bevor sich der Vorhang für diese Triennale-Ausgabe schließt. Zwei Städte, zwei Scheren, ein Vermächtnis, das gerade weiterwächst. ✂️🌊

Throwback to the unveiling of VALIE EXPORT‘s Doppelgängerin last Friday!

The piece by VALIE EXPORT features that figure in female form, adding the suffix “-in” to create a new word and a new understanding. Her representation of it is one of a doubled pair of scissors rendered on a grand scale. These can be seen here as the attribute of a seamstress—symbolizing needlework, which is stereotyped as a woman’s chore—but also as the tool used for film editing. Or they possibly refer to physical enhancement, hinting at surgical procedures or trimming. Upscaled to become larger than life, they gain significant symbolic weight which is distributed evenly between violent control (over women’s bodies) and agency (when held in the right hands), while repetition increases their interpretive potential.

Erected in downtown Warsaw, the scissors remind us both of the historical horrors of the place and of the real role of women who were pushed to the very margins of social life. At the same time they stand for cutting the ties with the past, marking new beginnings. It is up to us what exactly they’re going to mean—depending on what we do, or fail to do, in the days and years to come.

Po raz pierwszy motyw splecionych par nożyc Valie Export wykorzystała w 2009 roku w kampanii wiedeńskiego centrum tańca współczesnego – Tanzquartier. Rok później przełożyła go na monumentalną rzeźbę, która stanęła w ogrodzie Belvedere w stolicy Austrii przy okazji wystawy przygotowanej z okazji 70. urodzin artystki. Dziś możemy podziwiać ją w Warszawie tuż przy gmachu Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej @msnwarszawa.

VALIE EXPORT’s monumental sculpture Die Doppelgängerin will be unveiled on *September 18, 2 pm on Central Square, right next to the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (MSN).

Taking the form of twin pairs of oversized scissors, the piece represents both working equipment—as a device for agency in the hands of female dressmakers or film editors—and violence. The recently deceased VALIE EXPORT was the pioneer of Europe’s feminist art. In her work she challenged the conservative understanding of gender and sexuality, and through a number of spectacular undertakings targeting the old hierarchies and order she revolutionized contemporary art by introducing new means of, and devices for, artistic expression. Erected in downtown Warsaw, the scissors remind us both of the historical horrors of the place and of the real role of women who were pushed to the very margins of social life. At the same time they stand for cutting the ties with the past, marking new beginnings.

Nächtliche Hommage an VALIE EXPORT
Kunsthaus Bregenz

In the summer of 2026, after dark, KUB will be exhibiting works by the recently deceased VALIE EXPORT at Karl-Tizian-Platz.

“And now she is gone, yet we will never pass her by again.” With these words, Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek concludes her tribute to VALIE EXPORT, who passed away on 14 May. The Austrian performance artist will also take centre stage in Bregenz city centre in the summer of 2026: until the end of August, the Kunsthaus Bregenz will project images of VALIE EXPORT’s works – including her iconic body configurations from the 1970s and the more recent photo series HAUT-DIALOG, 2024 – onto the large screen at Karl-Tizian-Platz. daily 21:00-24:00

So radikal und konfrontativ das künstlerische Werk von VALIE EXPORT stets war, so expressiv präsentiert sich auch diese kraftvolle Retrospektive. In seitenfüllender, versaler Typografie tritt das Schwarzweiß-Cover dem Betrachtenden mit Vehemenz entgegen und lässt in das filmische Universum der Künstlerin eintauchen. VALIE EXPORT, die einst den Namen ihres Vaters und Mannes als Akt der Befreiung ablegte, beschäftigte sich auch in diesem Genre und aus feministischer Perspektive mit den Fragen nach der Identität. „Der nackte Körper ist Botschaft, Wandlung das Ziel, der Affront das Angebot“, so der ebenfalls überdimensional gesetzte Klappentext. Zahlreiche Autorinnen lassen auf Einladung der Herausgeber*innen einzelne Arbeiten Revue passieren, ordnen sie ein und reflektieren ihr politisches Potenzial.
Dieser inhaltlich gewaltigen Auseinandersetzung steht eine ebenso kraftvolle Buchgestaltung zur Seite. Eine sorgfältige Papierwahl greift den Film-Charakter ebenso gelungen auf wie die Abbildungen mit gerundeten Ecken, die an Filmstreifen erinnern. Die Jury lobte das „mutige und erfrischende Layout mit seinen raffinierten Detaillösungen“ und verwies unter anderem auf das ungewöhnliche Pagina-Konzept. Der enge Satz schafft eine dichte Atmosphäre, ergänzt durch die eigenwilligen Aufmacherseiten der Kapitel.
Ein Schwarz-Weiß-Band mit sehr konsequentem Konzept, das durchweg überzeugte: „Von dem großartigen Einstieg über das spannungsreiche Raster bis hin zur schönen Barcode-Nutzung auf der Rückseite, macht das Buch einfach Spaß!“
Zu diesem Zeitpunkt konnte überdies noch niemand wissen, dass dieser Band eine der letzten Würdigungen der großartigen Künstlerin darstellt. VALIE EXPORT verstarb im Mai 2026 kurz vor ihrem 86. Geburtstag, fast ein Jahr nach Erscheinen des Bandes.
