This past month, I had the opportunity to create a custom marquetry piece based on a beautiful photo taken in Scotland. Choosing and cutting the different wood species to capture the orange hills, snowy mountains, and little white cottage was incredibly meaningful, especially knowing I was recreating a landscape that held so much significance to my client. Such a privilege to turn a place she loves into a piece of art!

“Caught Grazing” is one of my newest artworks, capturing a playful, whimsical moment with a highland cow. As I continue exploring emotion in my work, I wanted this piece to feel fun, light, and a little carefree!

Meet @valsmarquetry! We are super excited to have her and her work at the @backyard_boutique_art_fair on May 9th. Valerie Ho is an Asian American, self-taught marquetry artist whose work is guided by a desire to create warmth throughout her art. She reimagines the decorative tradition of marquetry through a contemporary lens, using wood as both material and metaphor. Grounded in values shared across Texas and Asian cultures such as family, humility, and care, her work invites viewers into spaces that feel welcoming and familiar.
Come see us in Waco, Texas on May 9th. 215 Arrowhead Pt. 11:00-6:00.

Material with a unique texture and sheen has made it tough for me to capture the essence of marquetry in a single photo. Hoping to use more sunlight to showcase my work and the different wood species I use for each piece

For the Silhouettes Collection, I look to explore movement within nature, stature and form in animals. For these artworks, I used yellow Ako wood to convey a sun beaten path and Zebrawood/Paldao to emphasize the dry, sandy ground while keeping the elephant as the focal point of this piece
