ā€œHold the line, pleaseā€¦ā€

Once upon a time, making a phone call involved finding a red box, slamming the door behind you, and desperately searching your pockets for enough loose change.

Today, most of us carry the entire telephone network in our pockets. But in Kingston upon Thames, south London, the old phone still has the last word.

Tucked along Old London Road is ā€œOut of Orderā€, David Mach’s wonderfully eccentric 1989 sculpture. Twelve classic K6 telephone boxes appear to be toppling into one another like a giant game of dominoes — frozen forever in the moment before the whole lot comes crashing down.

It’s funny, clever and unmistakably British: a monument to a piece of everyday life that has almost completely disappeared.

Before smartphones, these red boxes connected us to home, work, friends… and occasionally to a very impatient person waiting outside.

Proof that even when technology moves on, good design — and a little British eccentricity — can keep a conversation going. ā˜ŽļøšŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

From the plains of Kenya to the streets of London.
The ā€œHerd of Hopeā€ has arrived at Spitalfields Market—a moving public art installation of 21 life-sized bronze elephants created by acclaimed artists @gillieandmarcart.
Led by a majestic matriarch, the 20 smaller calves each represent an individual rescued orphan from the @sheldricktrust in Kenya.
Each sculpture carries a scannable QR code letting you watch the orphan’s rescue video and support their rehabilitation directly.
A truly powerful and heartwarming sight in the heart of London.

Conquering the dizzying alpine heights of Denmark at Himmelbjerget—literally translated as ā€œThe Sky Mountain.ā€
Standing at a breathtaking 147 meters (482 feet) above sea level, it pays to pace yourself so the thin Danish air doesn’t catch you off guard. 🫨
Until 1847, we Danes genuinely believed this was the highest point in the entire country, which tells you everything you need to know about Danish topography.
To help close the gap to the clouds, we added the 25-meter brick tower in 1875 to honour King Frederik VII and the Danish constitution.
While modern surveying eventually broke local hearts—revealing a few spots in the neighbourhood that top it by a handful of meters—nothing beats the panoramic view over Lake JulsĆø and the endless green forests of the Lake District.

No crampons or oxygen tanks required, just a solid pair of walking shoes and a deep appreciation for Danish optimism. šŸ˜„

Ever wondered what powered a farm before tractors?
Say hello to this stunning Hestegangshus (Horse Engine House)!
This unique, nine-sided beauty at The Funen Village (Den Fynske Landsby) in Odense is a real time capsule from the 19th century.
Forget ā€˜horsepower’ under a bonnet – back then, it was actual horses walking in endless circles inside this very building! 🐓
By turning a massive gear wheel, they generated the energy to drive the threshing machine in the adjacent barn via a drive shaft.
It’s early mechanisation in action!
This particular house originally stood in Sdr. NƦrå but was carefully moved here to complete Torupgården’s historical layout after their original horse mill was sadly demolished in 1897.
Talk about a meaningful restoration! šŸ’š

Visiting Den Fynske Landsby feels like walking straight into a history book, and this unique octagonal structure is definitely a highlight.

A very attentive audience in Odense, Denmark…

A little dog stops to visit Hans Christian Andersen, perhaps hoping for a fairy tale before continuing on his walk.
Luckily, Andersen knows just the story to tell! 🐶
Perhaps the little fellow is listening to The Tinderbox, one of Andersen’s most famous tales. It features not one, but three enormous magical dogs—with eyes as big as teacups, mill wheels, and even round towers!
Maybe he is sitting there thinking: ā€œFinally, a fairy tale where the dogs are the real heroes!ā€ šŸ˜„

A quiet, timeless moment on the cobblestones where classic history meets pure curiosity.

A little piece of old Funen

Step back in time at The Funen Village (Den Fynske Landsby) in Odense, Denmark — where thatched roofs, crooked timber frames and grazing sheep make you wonder if someone accidentally left the door open to the 19th century.

This open-air museum brings rural Funen to life, with historic farmhouses, workshops, gardens and animals showing how people lived and worked more than 150 years ago.

And there’s a literary connection too: Hans Christian Andersen was born and grew up in Odense, not far from here.
His fairy tales may have featured princesses, emperors and talking animals — so perhaps a sheep wandering around an old cottage would have felt perfectly at home in one of his stories! šŸ“–

A peaceful place to discover Denmark’s rural heritage — and maybe to let your imagination wander a little too.

Chasing an 84% solar eclipse at Brabrand Lake… and getting a 90% cloud cover instead! ā˜ļøā˜€ļø
Nature didn’t quite play along, but a quiet evening by the water with a brief, moody glimpse through the clouds still made it worth the ride.

Some buildings whisper history.
Strasbourg Cathedral in France practically shouts it.

Standing 142 metres (466 ft) tall, it was the world’s tallest building for more than 200 years—from 1647 to 1874.
Not bad for a church that was begun in 1015 and took centuries to complete!

What makes it even more fascinating is that, despite its enormous size, it has only one tower.
The second one was never built—and somehow, that’s exactly what gives the cathedral its unmistakable silhouette.

Photographing it at night is an experience in itself.
As the warm golden light reveals every carving and Gothic detail, it’s easy to understand why Victor Hugo called it ā€œa gigantic and delicate marvel.ā€
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t taking the photo…
it’s fitting the whole cathedral into the frame!

When a handsome deer decides to pose for the camera… you don’t argue.

This impressive stag was photographed in the Deer Park (Dyrehaven) in Aarhus, Denmark.
The park is home to hundreds of free-roaming sika and fallow deer, making it one of the city’s most peaceful places to experience wildlife up close.

During summer, the stags grow a soft, velvety covering over their antlers.
This ā€œvelvetā€ is rich in blood vessels and supplies the nutrients needed for the antlers to grow—one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom.
Later in the season, the velvet is shed, revealing the hard antlers used during the autumn rut.

A wonderful reminder that some of nature’s most spectacular sights are just a short walk away.

If villages could compete for the title of ā€œMost Likely to Make You Slow Down,ā€ Nordby on the Danish island of SamsĆø would be a serious contender. šŸŒ¼šŸ”

Founded in the Middle Ages, Nordby is one of Denmark’s best-preserved villages, famous for its charming half-timbered houses, thick thatched roofs, holly hedges, and colourful cottage gardens. Walking these quiet streets feels like stepping into a storybook.

And then there’s the local welcoming committee… 🐶 This cheerful little dog seemed determined to make sure no visitor left without a smile. Whether it was saying hello or simply checking if I had treats, I’ll never know—but it definitely stole the scene.

Some places are worth visiting for the sights.
Others are worth visiting for the feeling.
Nordby gives you both.

Some places are made for drones—and The Infinite Bridge in Aarhus, Denmark, is definitely one of them.

From the ground, it’s a beautiful wooden pier. From the air, it suddenly becomes a perfect circle stretching into Aarhus Bay, inviting you to keep walking… until you realise you’ve been tricked into ending up exactly where you started. Talk about commitment to getting your steps in! šŸ˜„

Designed by architects Niels Povlsgaard and Johan GjĆøde, the bridge was originally created for the 2015 Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. It became such a favourite with locals and visitors that it now returns as a seasonal landmark every year.

With a diameter of 60 metres, it stands where a historic steamship pier once connected the beach with the beautiful Marselisborg Forest.

The paragliders were an unexpected bonus. They seemed determined to steal the spotlight—but in the end, the real star is still that elegant wooden circle, perfectly suspended between the sea and the sky.

Graceful company on the River Ill

While wandering through the beautiful streets of Strasbourg, France, I came across this elegant swan family gliding peacefully along the River Ill.
The proud parent seemed to be leading the way, while the fluffy cygnets followed closely behind—occasionally stopping to investigate absolutely everything, just like curious children on holiday.

The River Ill winds its way through the heart of Strasbourg and around the city’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, creating countless peaceful corners where nature and history meet. Moments like this are a lovely reminder that even in a bustling city, wildlife is never far away.
