Swipe for residency progress(scroll for nl)Zomerhuis is a working period for artists, researchers and makers who immerse themselves in the infrastructure of the Van Abbehuis during the summer months. We offer support for the development of new forms of production in the old spaces of the villa. Last week to visit the book making assembly line of the current residents 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦. Outcome of the Zomerhuis residency: part 57 (𝘧𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺) is on view from august 6 at our new temporary location, Stadhuisplein 3. NL:Zomerhuis is een werkplaats voor kunstenaars, onderzoekers en makers die gedurende de zomermaanden werken in en met de infrastructuur van Van Abbehuis. We bieden ondersteuning bij het ontwikkelen van nieuwe vormen van productie in de oude ruimtes van de villa.Deze week is de laatste week om de boekproductie-residentie van de huidige residenten 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 te bezoeken. 、We’re glad to share that the Mondriaan Fund will support our public radio programme over the coming year. Our broadcasts foster live conversations and encounters between artists, writers, sound practitioners and public through the medium of radio. We invite different (post)-production frictions into conversations that forget its environment or become the spaces environment. It feautures generative sound performances, in-situ events, immaterial practices and listening exercises. The programme approaches radio as much as an unexpected public gathering, as it is an ongoing auditory document of temporal inhabitants of Van Abbehuis.Our nomadic physical station and online broadcasts can be found through our website under education (depicted in image: hosts Radu Mihai Tănasă, Demi van Kuijk, and Vinith Bhandari in a live broadcast with Gaia Cavagliá, Laura López Ferrer, Leonie Schwarzman and Lisa Kiesgen alongside a visitor and curator during their latest performance). Instead, you bring it to the temple, and wait for someone else to adopt it. What happens to belief when the object is gone? What does it mean to exchange a text for a god? Book of the WeekIn the former kitchen—now library space—of the Van Abbehuis, we are currently housing temporary bookshop 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳. Each week, we highlight one of the books available in the space.This week’s pick: part 47 (𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴) by 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦The collaged envelopes and bags reproduced in this colourful and visually rich book were made in response to Ursula K. Le Guin’s seminal essay The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction (1986), during a one-month work period organised by the collective at Klemm’s in Berlin in August 2023.Published by the ques–verlag.Currently the artist collective 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 is working at Van Abbehuis on a new chapter (part 57) in their ongoing exploration of collective work. They’ve set up an assembly line in the main space, producing unique books from their extensive archive of drawings, prints, sketches and other work on paper that has been created since 2019. 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 is open during the regular opening hours of Van Abbehuis and during events, until July 12th. This week’s pick: Freinet Techniques by Paul Gangloff (ed.)“Since the first experiments, when Célestin Freinet brought movable type and a printing press into his classroom in 1924, thousands of school magazines were written, typeset and printed by children who were learning to read and write with what would be called the ‘Freinet techniques.’ Besides the development of skills, making these magazines also gave form to a visual language spreading an enthusiasm for a new, emancipatory vision on education through an international network of schools.”The result of a long-term research project by Paul Gangloﬀ, this carefully designed and edited book brings together hundreds of reproductions from these school magazines, accompanied by essays from graphic designer César Roger and artist-researcher Marie Preston.
