The actor knew it wasn’t real.
His nervous system responded like it was.
Everything was choreographed.
Everyone had consented.
The scene was safe.
And still...
Cut.
His breathing changed.
The hairs on his arms stood up.
He had to keep reminding himself:
“I’m safe.”
That isn’t weakness.
That isn’t “getting too into character.”
It’s a normal stress response to repeated threat cues.
Because a scene isn’t just one take.
It’s rehearsal after rehearsal.
Take after take.
Setup after setup.
Coverage after coverage.
Every repetition asks the nervous system to do it again.
That’s why psychological safety doesn’t end when the cameras roll.
It belongs before, during, and after every scene.
Because actors repeat performances.
Nervous systems repeat experiences.

A lot of new people have joined this page lately, so let me properly introduce myself to y’all!
I’m Aryn Mott.
Canada’s first certified Mental Health + Intimacy Coordinator for Film & TV.
One of the first 50 SAG-AFTRA approved Intimacy Coordinators worldwide.
UBCP/ACTRA member.
Master’s in Psychology focused on performer mental health and sustainable industry practices.
Now continuing that work toward my PhD.
For the last 18+ years, I’ve worked across Film, TV, and Theatre.
With 3,600+ hours on set.
100+ credits in Mental Health, Intimacy, and Performance.

INTIMACY DOESN’T MEAN OBLIGATION.

Saying yes to an intimate scene doesn’t mean saying yes to every version of that scene.

Consent exists.
Boundaries can change.
Choreography can be adjusted.
Questions are allowed. And the flavour of the scene can still be told.

And you don’t need to have a dramatic reason for a boundary.

“I’m not comfortable with that” is enough.

Intimacy Coordinators help create clarity around intimate material: what’s happening, what’s been agreed to, where boundaries are, and how everyone can communicate throughout the process.

Because performer can boundaries doesn’t mean compromising the story.

It means creating the conditions for the work to happen with clarity, consent and collaboration.

Save this for your next intimate scene.
And send it to an actor, director, producer or crew member who needs to hear it.

REAL ON CAMERA. SIMULATED ON SET.
What an audience sees on screen is not necessarily what is happening between performers on set.
Intimate scenes, like stunts, can be carefully choreographed through positioning, distance, eyelines, timing and camera perspective.
The goal is to create a believable story without requiring performers to actually perform the act being portrayed.
This is where intimacy choreography becomes an important part of the filmmaking process.
An IC can help translate the creative intention into clear, agreed-upon choreography while keeping performer boundaries at the centre.
Because the most convincing intimacy on screen doesn’t have to come from real intimacy.
It can come from really good filmmaking.

What if understanding stunt coordination could help us better understand intimacy coordination?
NO! ICs and stunt coordinators are not the same job.
But there are some useful parallels.
Both involve advocacy.
Both involve choreography.
Both require communication, preparation and clear agreements before the action happens.
A stunt isn’t usually approached with:
“Just do it when we roll.”
So why do we sometimes approach intimate content that way?
Intimacy deserves the same level of thoughtfulness and preparation, while recognizing that it comes with its own unique expertise, risks and considerations.
Sometimes, finding a familiar framework is what helps people understand something new.

That was Kaden’s reaction to working with an Intimacy Coordinator for the first time.
Lunar Sway was my first project with Kaden and a collaboration that became so much more than one film.

Wann hat dich am Set das letzte Mal jemand gefragt, wie es dir wirklich geht?

Nach einer emotional schweren Szene geht es oft sofort weiter. Druck, lange Tage und Diskriminierung stecken wir weg, weil „das halt dazugehört“.

In „Performing with Resilience“ (Routledge, 2026) zeigt @vancityic, Kanadas erste zertifizierte Mental Health & Intimacy Coordinator, wie Sets psychologisch sicherer werden. Es geht um Grenzen, Consent und darum, wie man nach einer Rolle wieder bei sich ankommt.

Warum das für unsere Arbeit relevant ist:

- Resilienz ist keine Charaktereigenschaft. Sie hängt davon ab, unter welchen Bedingungen wir arbeiten.
- Psychologische Sicherheit gibt es nicht ohne Inklusion. Wer am Set Diskriminierung erlebt, ist dauerhaft stärker belastet.
- Nicht nur Performer*innen brauchen Schutz. Auch Crew, Nachwuchs und alle ohne Agentur oder starke Lobby brauchen ihn.

So what does an Intimacy Coordinator actually DO?

We’re not the fun police. We’re collaborators.

We work with performers and the creative team to figure out the details, boundaries, movement, and what happens if the plan changes.

Because when everyone knows the plan? There’s more room to play.

That’s Intimacy Coordination.

Structure doesn’t kill creativity.
It creates room for it.

Consent police ? Nah, that’s not actually the job.
We don’t police actors.
We don’t replace directors.
We don’t remove intimacy from stories.
We help create the structure, communication, consent and choreography that lets performers actually do the work.
Because the goal isn’t to make intimacy less. It’s to make it intentional.
And sometimes the thing that gives an actor the most creative freedom…is knowing exactly where the boundaries are. Where is everywhere that we can play?
