I got bitten by a swan when I was 4 years old. My Dad had told me not to get too close but I simply couldn’t resist the pull to touch such a beautiful creature. The swan didn’t move away, she didn’t hiss or warn me, instead she looked at me so intensely, almost as if for a split second she’d forgotten I was human. Then it happened and my moment with her was cut short. I cried as 4 year olds do and my Dad finally dragged me back and bought me an ice cream. I’d learnt my lesson but for that split second I’d seen something indescribable looking back at me.

Swans are so beautiful to me, they are equal parts feral as they are elegance. They look peaceful on top of the water, underneath they work hard, they mate for life yet seem so independent. I like swans, I don’t care that I was bitten and they will remain a reminder, 2 things can exist at once. by @vanessacarr__
