Oscars 2024 🥂 so many people to recognize… I want to start by thanking my ankles for remaining strong on the red carpet through all the champagne, my braider Cherise who plaited my hair so tight I could see my thoughts yet not move my face, my makeup artist from @charlottetilbury the wonderful and sweetest @tamzinmua for snatching my cheekbones as high as my hairline and most importantly, the amazing TikTok team who killed it putting our livestream and partnerships across Oscars season together @lauranicolucci @alicenoonan @corirosen @chalaby and especially my hot date and Entertainment head baddie @lesdeuxmondes ❤️ taken in Dolby Theater by @vanessacraft

Had the pleasure of being in the company of
@venuswilliams today. We talked about the importance of everyday advocacy, building culture from the beginning within your business, pay equity and … then she tried to convince me that going to the gym at 530 in the morning was a good idea.

Toronto got some love, (even though Venus said she has never won a match in the city), “You have the Caribbean festival and everything!” and “the best karaoke bars”

📢 Last Month, I was promoted into a new role at TikTok as the first Global Head of Lifestyle & Education, leading content strategy, global programs and partnerships across Fashion, Beauty, Books, Travel/Food, Cultural Institutions & Non Profits. ✨ It’s a huge opportunity to be able to work with an all star group of peeps on these influential and 😎 categories.

As the sole Canadian exec on the global content leadership team, perhaps my 1st priority should be to introduce my peers to our country’s core DNA markers: Toronno mans slang, Poutine, Snow tires and the cultural reset that was Jose Bautista’s 2019 bat flip. What an unbelievable loss for art and culture. He challenged and reinterpreted our definition of what those things even meant. What Virgil leaves as legacy is the colossal zeitgeist shift he created. I loved attending his shows because the atmosphere was unlike any other on the fashion week calendar- different energy. The crowd outside was its own fashion show: diverse, full of their own ideals for what fashion is, curious…. and too cool for school. Reeling from this news. This is a photo of my father. He was from New York by way of Evansville, Indiana. In his late teens, he was drafted into the navy for the Vietnam war. At some point after enlisting, he went AWOL. He never returned to America, living here in Canada until his death in 2018, working and fighting for social change in the community. He also never saw his mother or siblings or family again. Even after some amnesties were granted, dad didn’t trust that it would be safe to go back. It became a source of lifelong paranoia. ⁣⁣

As a kid, when I asked why he challenged authority like this, he said he “didn’t want to fight a white man’s war”. But more often, when I would push for more details, he would simply and emphatically tell me, “Killing people is wrong, Vanessa.” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There are many statements on social media right now about race and power and the abuse of both. I’m exhausted and I’m finding it challenging to articulate my feelings or offer much by way of commentary. But I know this: When it comes to principles and sacrifices, there are some that are individual and some that should be universally shared. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
To be clear this post is NOT anti-veteran; it’s about personal choices in the face of global challenges. I chose this photo and story because it represents a moment in time when a person is coming to terms with their beliefs and taking action, no matter what the sacrifice. (I also just really like this photo of my hippie dad flexing, just a few years shy of meeting my hippie mom.) ⁣⁣

My questions to everyone are as follows: what are you willing to sacrifice in this current situation? What are the principles you live by? What are you going to do to make this right? When the dust has settled, did you choose comfort over clarity? How will you be remembered? ⁣⁣
