Got a nice surprise in the mail today! A six-page spread in the Spring issue of the @capacanada Canadian Photography magazine where I talk about the compromises I make when travelling with a camera. The boat tour that almost didn’t happen turned into such a fun night (thanks @ottawapalapatours )! Hatshepsut was one of the few female pharaohs of Egypt who ruled from 1479BC to 1458BC and her mortuary temple is quite an architectural marvel. Like the Valley of the Kings, mortuary temples and tombs are on the West side of the Nile, where the sun sets. After our visit we saw how alabaster is carved into beautiful art and functional pieces then had lunch in a home at a nearby village. The streets were decorated for Ramadan that was starting in a week. I love that @gadventures includes home-hosted lunches on their tours so we get a glimpse and a taste of local life. The Valley of the Kings is a must on any Egypt itinerary. It’s just so incredible to see the carvings, colours and paintings that decorated the underground tombs for the pharaohs that lived and ruled between roughly 1500-1000 BCE. While most tombs had been robbed of their treasures over the years, King Tutankhamun’s was only discovered in 1922. While all the treasures are now in a beautiful gallery dedicated to the young pharaoh, his actual mummy is still on display in the tomb. It’s the only one in the valley and you need to buy an extra ticket to enter. A general ticket will give you acccess to any 3 tombs that are open (varies but around 8-10) with the exception of 3 that need extra tickets (Seti I, Ramses V & VI and Tutankhamun). If you want to see more, you can buy another general ticket. I visited the tombs of Ramses IV, Merenptah and Ramses. Then at the last minute, suffering from FOMO, bought a ticket online on my phone to see King Tut since the ticket office is a shuttle ride away back to the main entrance. My biggest tip is to go early to avoid the crowds and the heat. We got there at 6:45am and it was getting quite crowded when we left at 9am. Give yourself more time if you want to see more tombs.
