Peak 1st Term Obama time of life. Living in DC, going on family walks and Obama would be out in community. We’d go to dinner and Michelle and the girls would be a few seats down. Literally. So when Ronnie says “I know him!” he truly meant it. What a time this was… by @vanessaforddc

I have spent decades loving and teaching about the incredible Monarch. I spent 7 years growing a pollinator garden before our first egg arrived. I have watched hundreds of students experience true awe in metamorphosis. I’ve tagged and released over 100 on their journey to winter in Mexico. I got the lifecycle tattooed as a full sleeve. So yes, I’m furious, again at yet another example of this administrations horrible impact on the world.

To JR on our 18th Anniversary:

It was love at first sight.
And then, it became love for a lifetime.

Twenty-one years together. Eighteen married.
A thousand versions of us.

You have loved every one of mine.

Through changing bodies,
changing plans,
changing homes,
changing dreams,
and all the ways life asks us
to become someone new.

You have never asked me to be less.
You don’t ask anyone to be less.

You are gentle in a world
that has not always been gentle with you.
Fiercely loyal.
Deep thinking.
Math loving.
A man who has so often been the first or the only in the room,and still looks around to see who else needs bringing in.

Watching you love our children
has been one of the great loves of my life.
You don’t tell them who to be.
You stand beside them
as they become exactly who they are.

You love with words,
but even more with action.
With steadiness.
With trust.
With showing up.

And somehow, from that very first day, you have looked at me as if there were nothing about me that needed explaining away.

Twenty-one years ago,
I fell in love with you at first sight.

Eighteen years ago,
I married you.

And every version of life since
has given me another reason
to choose you again.

For Shay On Your Birthday

You were eight when I first met you
spunky and curious,
always learning,
always ready for whatever adventure came next.

And somehow, fifteen years later,
you found me again.

What a gift it has been
to get to know you twice,
to watch that adventurous little girl
become this intentional, loving, determined woman.

Still curious.
Still brave.
Still willing to step into the unknown,
only now with Shia beside you.

And the way you love your son?

Shayla, you are the mom of the century.
Maybe ever.

You are building a life for the two of you
with intention and courage,
feeling your way forward,
choosing what matters,
walking into places you’ve never been
and finding your way as you go.

All those years ago,
in that class, we’d sing Lift Every Voice and Sing.

And now I’ll honor that song
by forever lifting yours.

When your joy is too big to contain,
I will celebrate it with you.

When the road feels uncertain,
I will remind you that you can do hard things.

I am so proud of you,
of the woman you have become,
